Just hung a Yamaha F40BMLH, manual start 4stroke. Bought it under the impression it had an alternator, and all online specs agree. I'd like to connect it to my little trim tab battery to keep it charged. Would the wires be inside the cowling, and do I need a rectifier/regulator? Thanks for any info.

ok, first it isn't an alternator, it's a stator(generator) and it's just magnets under the flywheel, like the rest of them....and yes there are two isolator leads for charging, should be coming off the regulator/rect. assembley that is on the same side of engine as starter(port) and toward the rear of motor...has fins on it for cooling. You should see one pair of wires that are taped together and longer, test these with meter and should get 12V(+) while engine running. But I'm not 100% sure, as I don't work on little ones myself....but if it's there that's where and how it'll be...
