Hi guys I've got a 1972 125hp johnson, I just had a new water pump put in it a couple days ago. The mechanic that did it said the oil was way to thin so he put whatever else into it. What will this do If I start the engine. I've only ever run type c, this is the first time anything else has been put in, now I'm having a hell of a time starting it up. Most likely coinsidental? thanks.

Coincidental. It'll shift sluggish, put the powerhead would be unaffected.

If the motor has electric shift or hydro electric shift it should have thin oil.
I believe the type c as you call it.It would appears either you were using the wrong lube or your mechanic is inexpierenced.
Electric shift/Hydro electric won't shift properly with the regular outboard gear lube.Shouldn't effect ability to start or run.

that's what I thought, I just put 12v to the green wire which is neutral, I can turn the prop, yet when I turn the key nothing happends. I mean nothing. Does thicker oil not allow the solonoids in the leg to shift properly?

gear oil issue is your main suspect no doubt, but before jumping to conclusions............check your main 20A fuse..................... ;)

It would have to be one heck of a difference in the oil to cause this.

Gear oil won't affect cranking. Look for something else.

Re: consiquences wrong leg oil?

This is where I'm at. I just changed the oil back to premium blend, (type C)
I have tested my key switch and it works. After this I added 12v directly to green and we still have absolutely nothing. I'm begining to suspect the mechanic may have re-assembled the leg wrong after the water pump, possibly unhooking the shift solonoids in the leg. I say this because if my key works and fwd rev switch works, and 12v at green works but the boat won't even click, it leads me to that he unhooked the solonoids and therefore my engine is stuck in fwd, and I can't change that unless I remove the leg and have a look, but that's why I paid him so I'll take it back and he can do it. Any more idea's will help.

Re: consequences of wrong lu oil?

Have you tried bypassing the key switch by jumping the starter, I dont know if you have hydro electric or electric shift? We need some more facts...Does it turn over at all?

I"ll almost bet that your inexperienced (with electric shift) mechanic either broke the wires or connected them wrong when he had the leg down. It will probably need to come down again. He should do this for free, and you need to oversee him so that you can see exactly what damage he has caused.

Re: consiquences wrong leg oil?

Hi guys, so I connected the two white wires off of the fwd rev switch and it turned over by the key switch. So I then hooked it up to the muffs and tried to start it up. It fired right up, and sounded awesome. So I guess one way or another I've got to come up with a new set of controls or a selector switch. It starts great but now I can't shift it.

I am not real familer with this motor, does it have a proving switch in the leg to confirm it is in neutral. If so this may be the trouble.

Re: consiquences wrong leg oil?

I started the engine again and this time I wanted to test the fwd rev solonoids in the leg. When the engine was running it was of course in neutral. I unhooked the green connector at the bottom of the power head and the engine shifted beautifully into drive, no voltage= drive. I hooked the green wire back up and it shifted into neutral. The only thing I didn't test was reverse for some reason, I thought that was good enough for me. I know 12v on green and blue would be reverse, everything else worked so that should as well. right?

Re: consiquences wrong leg oil?

We know the shift switch is shot. We also know the neutral are OK. We don't know that reverse is OK, until verified.
