constant alarm question

My alarm is constant in the on position w/ engine off. I have diagnosed it to be a stuck/bad float in the oil tank. When I check the continuity of the oil level indicator out of the tank, it's fine, in the tank I get the alarm. If I turn the tank upside down, the alarm goes off.

The question that I have is this, if the alarm is engaged does it have the ability to de-regulate the engine?

The engine is a 1999 45jet.

Re: constant alarm question

If that is the engine mounted oil tank, they have a problem sometimes of the adhesive holding the magnet to the float failing. The magnet falls near the switch and the alarm blows constantly.

Instead of alerting you to a 'Low Oil' condition it just makes you crazy.

Replace the tank with the new tank kit from Merc. You cannot pull the float out and fix the old one.

Until you replace it, unpllug one of the switch wires and keep an eye on the oil level, and no, the alarm does not effect performance, it simply alerts the operator. Newer EFI's the alarm IS wired into the system, and cuts power output in attempt to prolong engine life.

Re: constant alarm question

I took it back out yesterday evening and just left it unplugged. My loss of power was a couple rocks that were sucked up and stuck in the output of the jet. It ran just fine. I've tried looking for a tank through Mercury but their site doesn't acknowledge my engine serial number??? I've found a tank replacement elsewhere and will be ordering this week.

Just curious though, does leaving one of the blue wires disco'd also take out the temp alarm?

Thanks for the reply CharlieB.

The temp alarm will still work. The last tank I ordered for a 94 model did not have the float in it. Never did find out what the story on that was.
