Control cables.

ok so on my 1985 85 hp force outboard, the throttle cable works great and the shift control cable puts it in reverse but not forward. It gets close to the point where you can hear the gears trying to engage, but they arent. So I was messing with them this afternoon and it seems that it isnt moving enough on the cable end to move it. Then out of no where I put it in nuetral and it engaged forward. Would this be a cable or the shift linkage needing adjustment on under the carbs? I had this adjusted for a different set of controls on a older boat. I put the motor on the new boat. NOw I have no forward. With the old cables I did have to adjust that shift linkage under the carbs for reverse to work. Is it possible that it needs to be adjusted for the new cables? It really seems like the cable isnt moving very much when i go into forward. I was also thinking of trying to adjust the cable up behind the controls. There are very little to no threads coming out of the outside of that attachment point no the back. On the old control cables there is about 5-7 threads showing. Where should I start? THanks for the advice.

Re: Control cables.

Well frank from what i could tell the cables at the motor are setup correctly. I was going to just swap the control cables over, but when I finally got the shift cable off the control box, The end of the cable up there didnt have but one thread on the connector. So I adjusted the cable end out to be close to the old cable and guess what I now have forward and reverse. Going to hook up a hose tomorrow and check it to make sure. I have no water faucet at my apartments. I have to go to my inlaws to use thiers. So I spun the prop while she put it in gear and it caught so if nothing else I am really close to it. Might need a fine tunning but should be close to start with. Thanks for the advice. I couldnt get the end in the motor to losen so I was thinking a frozen cable. That was why i was changing it. But when I saw the other end I decided to give it a shot. I now have F,N,R. hopefully. Thanks again frank.
