I just purchased a Mercury Mark 75A. I am finding out that it should be a direct reverse system. I also learned that it will need special controls. anyone know the part number for the controls and external harness I will need to run the boat.

Re: Controls to use on a Mercury Mark 75A

Back in those days controls had 2 levers; one for throttle and the other the shifter. One of the problems with that design was the fact that the shift lever had no idea where the throttle lever was sitting and it was common to see people slamming their engines in gear with the throttle at a 2000 rpm's when it should be more like 700. Played ....with the drive line.

From what I know about R in those days on Mercs, you had to stop the engine, put the shifter in R and restart the engine in R whereas today, you can easily shift from F to N to R at will (when at idle rpms). Real crummy design, especially on cold mornings when you wanted to back the boat off the trailer and the engine was too cold to start in gear, much less run there.

Might try an online shopper if you can't find a local dealer (or online dealer for that matter) that has been in business for 50 years and has some parts lying around.

My 2c,

Mark

1. When you say two lever shifter is this the type you are talking about? (refer to picture)

2. Also the boat does not come with an external harness. Is the harness supposed to go to the control box? dumb question but I'm still learning.

3. Where can I find information on the type of harness I need on a Mark 75A.

Your MK75A takes the old green single-lever control box. The lever for this box has pistol-grip handholds and a button in the very top of the lever.

The later-style direct-reversing control box is different and won't work with the older motors. The later-style box has a rubber-covered push button underneath the top of the shift handle and that's a good way to tell them apart. The wiring harness connectors are different too; the newer harness won't plug into the older motor, and vice-versa.

Here's a link to Old Merc wiring diagrams:

Note this site doesn't seem to be working right now, but I expect that's just a temporary thing. Lots of good info for old motors there, including carb & tuning info for your MK 75.

The control boxes pop up once and a while on eBay. Don't see anything listed right now, but I did find a reprinted parts manual for your motor. Looking at the table of contents, it does include info on the remote control which you may find useful:
