Controls won't go into reverse after wide open throttle

I have evinrude side mount controls with the warm up lever on the side, on a 1975 evinrude 50hp. The issue I have is ill reset the shifter gears inside the controls, so that all things function as they should. I take the lever to wide open throttle and then back to neutral and it won't go into reverse. Reset and the same thing happens again. I have assessed that it is not the motor and in fact is the controls.almost as if the throttle lever travels too far? Any thoughts would help , just finished restoring my 1968 Starcraft jetstar and this is frustrating to say the least

Yes, if I take it to part throttle then back its works as it should.

Ah sorry not sure I received them with the motor, nothing was mentioned when I purchased them. As far as resetting them I take the controls apart move the gear selector cable to neutral reassemble,

Next time you open it up take some pictures and post them. I do have a manual for that control.
