Jerry is TOTALLY correct in his thoughts on swapping out an AQ series drive. These were and still are the best drives ever manufactured in my opinion. Even when Volvo moved over to the SX / DPS-M line as their primary drives, they still kept putting the AQ series outdrives behind the high torque diesels till 2002.

Bob, you keep stating you have a 290 drive but in fact you tell us the model number is a DP-A and a DP-B1. You should stop referring to the drives as 290's. The 290 is a 1986 -1988 drive

The DP-B1 is no where close to a 290 in the upper and in fact there are parts in the SX and DPS-M that are the same.

I rebuild only Volvo drives and have no problem getting parts for the DP-A or the DP-B1. In fact I have a complete rebuilt upper sitting on the shelf that would fit right onto the DP-B all the way to a DP-E.

The lower units can be swapped from one another on models 280 all the way to the DP-E model

Those AQ series drives are BULLET PROOF. All I tell people is to change the "drive" bellow every 3 years and make sure to use synthetic oil ONLY when changing oil in the duoprops.

As for the vibration when turning someone above mentions, the only time I have found this issue is when the props are out of balance, meaning they are chipped or bent. I can't even count the number of times I have asked people what the condition of their props were where they tell me they are in good shape. I look and them and they are full of chips and dents.

In closing, if those units have preventative maintenance performed on them then they will be as dependable, if not more, than any unit out there.

Also that reverse lock can be repaired very easily and the key is simply keeping it clean to avoid problem.

Regarding the vibration problem when turning, it appears to be worse on the older drives that had coarse splines in the universal joint. I have a Draco 17 foot runabout with a 270 drive (coarse splines) and when turning to the sides(low or high speed), a vibration occurs. New universal joints, new bearings in the bell housing. The propeller is not new (looks ok), but I don't think it means that much at low speed.
The 290 drive (fine splines)I had on my Draco 18 runabout, didn't vibrate as much, but the SX drive I have on the boat today is an absolute joy to turn from side to side.
