Conversion from manual to electric

Have a 79 25hp Evinrude manual start and wanting to convert to electric start. As simple conversion as possible. I have a starter and bracket but nothing else. Not sure what all is needed for conversion. I'm thinking starter and push button start switch. Does not have to charge the battery as I will have on charger when not in use. Not sure if a solenoid is necessary or not. Pos battery wire to button switch and from switch to starter is all I'm thinking is needed. Any help is appreciated.

Looks like you are set. Flywheel lists as same P/N for both electric and rope start models.
Need for solenoid is determined by your switch. If your switch can take 50A 12VDC then no solenoid needed. I myself would buy a universal cheap 12vdc solenoid, wire it in and be done with it.

So if using a solenoid, then main battery positive 4 or 6 gage wire to large solenoid lug. 14 or 16ga jumper from large pos solenoid lug to switch. 14 or 16ga jumper from switch to small positive solenoid lug. 4 or 6ga wire from other large solenoid lug to positive on starter motor. 14 or 16ga wire from other (neg) small solenoid lug to ground on block. Your starter may or may not have a ground lug. If yes, then wire 4 or 6 ga from it to ground - otherwise the bracket will be ground for the starter. Last, need to wire 4 or 6ga neg wire from battery to ground on block.

Re: Conversion from manual to electric

Thanks Sandor27.....I wasn't sure about it. Didn't know...I've looked on ebay and places and saw, stators, power paks and such and didn't know if I needed all that or not. I didn't know if the pull start had a "thing" on it that told the engine to start when it was pulled or not and if so, if I would need to "fix" the "thing" to start the engine by starter. I'll look around for a button switch to hold the 50amps. If I may ask, what is the purpose of the solenoid? Seems like something else to go wrong and if not necessary, I tend to avoid those.

the solenoid is so the switch doesnt need high amps. i personally would go the solenoid route. less amps to the switch = safer. dont want high amps when your in the water.
also some models on the electric start, has different ignition to charge the battery.

Bombardier made an electric start upgrade kit for that engine: p/n 173964.

Thanks guys....I will definitely do the solenoid option. Being they are cheap enough. All I have to get is the solenoid, button switch and wiring....be much cheaper than buying a kit.
