Re: Convert a 15 hp to a 9.9

Found serial numbers on the motor on what looks to be a freeze plug. Does anyone know how to look up the number to find out the hp? I believe it is a 1994 Johnson

I've got a low hours 9.9hp Johnson from 1994, just started work on it and I'm looking for a good 15hp carb!
The freeze plug number should be the same as your serial number and underneath the model number - I think mine is almost certainly a European build, but your freeze plug must be the same I guess?

So for mine its J10RLERB J10 (Johnson 10 - well 9.9) RL (for Rope start Long shaft) ER (for 1994 according to the INTRODUCE code) and B (I guess for Belgium.) Yours will be J15 XX ER X if its a 94, ET for 93 or EO for 95 etc.

If the enforcement folks look at your serial number they will assume immediately that its a 15hp. Unless you have some 'official' way of persuading them that it is a 9.9hp you might have some explaining to do. Changing decals might just convince them you're trying to hide something!

If you want to swap the carb I'd be very happy to do it and cover any postage costs involved! Maybe a local dealer could 'certify' the change for you?

Good Luck!
