Tender Maid or Maid Rite would be another option. Loose cooked hamburger, steamed and kept in steam table - just add more frozen hamberger as needed. Scoop it on a bun and serve - no wait and lasts long time as long as kept warm in steam table.

Just a thought.

Re: Convert houseboat to burger joint??

pizza by the slice would only need a heat lamp.......and at 5 bucks a slice..!

glad you seem to be making headway with the rules......red tape is everything.....

as mentioned above........the auctions are great places to buy resturant equipment......just make sure you know what you are buying.....set your top dollar ....and dont go over it....you have lots of time to do it so.....dont get excited with the ....i need...i need. mentality....

ive bought 3 large icemakers from the auction......one a huge one from a hospital auction.......40 bucks......put in a new shutoff float.....and sold it to a bar for 1200.

Steam table, great idea. Used equipment is the only way I would go at this point. Dont need to spend on new until I see if this will be worth the time and effort.

Yes, the kids told her after we saw the houseboat locally !!! She wasnt to shocked, she is quite used to my crazy ideas by now........

The Coast Guard information is very helpful but I wouldn't let them speak for Nassau or Suffolk Counties.

Enjoy

Re: Convert houseboat to burger joint??

Here is a new one... I am thinking of buying a 40' houseboat and converting it to a floating burger joint. commercial fryer, stove etc. Would like to cook burgers, hot dogs etc.

This thought has crossed my mind before too. It's awful busy in season onthe rivers around here...not to mention at the island.
But, I already have a job.

I'm hoping Castro kicks off before I retire and Cuba opens up.
I smell a ferry business just waiting to happen.

Re: Convert houseboat to burger joint??

I think it is a great idea, and I wish we had something like this on the north shore, or even more restaurants to pull up to , dock, and grab a bite.

At our house in Wrightsville Beach, NC, there are at least 5 places on the water that you can pull up to on the boat, grab food/drinks & fuel and be off...Any of you familiar with that area I am sure have heard of places like Dockside, Fish House [now Airlie Seafood], and Bluewater....wish we had places like that here :(

Re: Convert houseboat to burger joint??

there is a big old converted car ferry, with a restaurant, general store and bakery. I think 3 guys went in on the project together and they make a ton of money. It goes to all the main bays and harbours in the straight, and when it comes everyone is at it. It pulls a dock system behind it and has attendants that will catch your lines and tie you up while you shop, has docking for about 20 small boats and there is always a line to dock. im sure it offers all kinds of other services too, I think they might have even started to sell fuel. there was some stupid limit to how much fuel you could buy though.

Re: Convert houseboat to burger joint??

What if I welded in a large gas grill on the stern and cooked premade (butcher made) burgers?? Would I need all kinds of food permits?? Figure it's like barbaquing in your back yard. Burgers, dogs etc. right off the grill Maybe I would only need a commercial freezer for the burgers and dogs. offer fresh boars head sandwiches etc...

What you will have to contend with will be a board of health food inspection, a vendors license for the city which you operate out of, and sufficient liability insurance since you are dealing with the public and possibly any employees.
You will also need to register your business and get a valid State Tax ID.
If running out of NYC, there will also be various city licenses to deal with I suppose.

Your pontoon would need to be pretty good sized to remain stable if for no other reason than to resist careless boaters picking up an order. You could probably come up with a long reach server tray of sorts as well.

I saw a floating eatery once on the Mississippi river, but it was more like a concession trailer sat atop a large pontoon. It had counters on three sides and fixed stools. It would moor for the day in a particular location and boats could tie off to it. (There would be no way to safely just anchor up and allow anyone to tie off, if you had to move in a hurry it would be unsafe).

Years ago I had a 42' sedan cruiser which we used like a party barge, I would go out and anchor and by the end of the day would have a dozen or more boats tied on. The more boats that attached, the more anchor I needed. It also was pretty hard on my boat, cleats and rails took a real beating. It got even more interesting a few times when a boat was left behind, you can't just tow it along.

The idea would work well even in the NY/NJ area if you can get all of the legalities taken care of. It would however be pretty much a 3 month season to make your money. There's not much business on the water before Memorial day or after Labor day.

You will most likely run into issues such as cooking with the motor running, waste disposal, and how to insure the rig itself against liability law suits.

You will pretty much have to follow all of the regulations for a land based food business, plus those which pertain to a mobile food vendor, and on top of all of that, any Coast Guard regulations pertaining to such an operation.
The latter would most likely not be too big a deal and there may not even be any particular rules currently in place. Your biggest concern would be vessel weight and safety equipment and maximum persons allowed on board.

I am past all this now. Did all the research and you are correct on the many things about vendor licenses and such. Do to the particular vendor license i am aquiring, no one would be allowed on the vessel. Hand off only. That is a major issue that I am happy about. Between rest room issues and liabilty I am not going that route.

I am working on this very project now. Converting 40' house boat. Flat Grill, Steam Table, Prep Table, Ice Box, etc... Fryer think twice or three times waves bad. I have been to food shows, you can do everything pre cooked, removes you from responsibility for under cooked. Do as much as you can from propane. Electricity very hard to come by in the middle of a lake. Go to www.theaquadog.com. Ken Dix had a good busiss on Kentucky Lake. Ken made a living but not much overhead owned his owne dock. He used a 30# can of propane a day alont with 10 gal fuel to run generator. Gene

Re: Convert houseboat to burger joint??

The lake I am on can have as many as 200 or more boats anchored at party cove. About 80% are smaller boats, under 25 ft. I would think they would keep a boat busy ordering food and buying ice. Most of these boats will have at least 5 or more people on them whom I am sure get hungry at some point. After all the drinking they need some food. If it is easy food to prep and serve than I do not see why this would not work. In an earlier post they talked about a $2.00 hot dog. What do you think you pay at a football game or baseball game, plus the $5.00 12 oz. beer? Been to a movie. Getting in is not the cost, buying the snacks is the real cost. I say go for it.

One thing I haven't seen and I did not read all postn but a few! What about the people at the Marinas around here they have things pretty tied up the rivers would be ok, but the traffic would be slow. The res. are the places that there are only a few Marinas and that could create problems or another on!! Plus who is going to police the garbage detail and all the litter, we already have enough of that!! ,,, Sounds like a great idea with a lot of problems and hoops to go thru, Good luck ,

Re: Convert houseboat to burger joint??

Ok folks, I am BACK!!!

After continuing my research and saving money. The project is back on track full speed ahead. All legal and health concerns have been addressed and I am cleared to get this project to the finish line.

I have purchased an old 38' Chris Craft houseboat ( a TANK) have all commercial kitchen equipment purchased on line auctions. Saved at least 20 grand!!!!

Boat has been gutted and in the process of being completely redone for this purpose. Engines completely redone and ready to go. Just need to replace outdrives (Volvo).

If anyone is interested, I would be happy to keep ya all in the loop.

Will start serving on April 1st. Go figure.

Happy new year!!
