Well, The exhaust yokes are in pretty bad shape on our Volvo Penta 280's and I am considering coverting to straight headers(out through the hull) I love the sound, and its alot cheaper then new yokes. But i am wondering where and how i should seal the old yokes?

Ayuh,... I'm Guessing you're talking about the exhaust Y-Pipes....

You'll have to pull the motors, Remove the Y-Pipes,+ bolt Block-Off Plates to the passages on the transom assembley to switch to thru-hulls...

I hope he is just talking about thru-hull and really switching to headers. In an enclosed engine compartment the temperature limit for components is 220*. This why the exhaust is water jacketed. A regular "dry" exhaust will not work.

Re: Converting to straight headers.

Hope you don't boat near many other people. Straight exhaust is extremely obnoxious to anyone behind your boat. Friend of mine has a 6.2L with straight exhaust (for sell!). I have to be 100 yards behind him to hold a comfortable conversation in my boat in a "no wake" zone. Once we're out on the water I just make sure I stay ahead of him.

Check your local laws.
Here in MD they have noise restrictions (so many DB so many feet from shore) and also it is illegal to run dry headers. This adds a little challenge for shutting down a Berkeley system when water is being pumped into the exhaust.

Re: Converting to straight headers.

I hope you don't take offense to my comment but I'm wondering why someone would want to increase their engine's noise level to a point where it is annoying to other boaters and those homes along the shore? That noise carrys a long way. I guess is if the one creating the noise was the only one hearing it then it would be ok but to subject others to it...

Looking for short cuts huh?

Smart kid, but your gonna outsmart yourself in the long run if you go this route.

Why you think they designed a water jacket around the riser exhaust.

Your looking to cut out the riser?

And jury rig it?

You won't get any help from me, i won't speak for all the other people on the forum.

You could the above, but if you decided to switch to silent choice system in the future, you'll have to pull the motor again to reinstall the y pipe. Just leave it in and buy some Fernco caps at home depot, cap the y pipe inlets off(water will leak into the boat if you don't) and go ahead and convert to thru-hull.

Btw,.... Nowhere will he state the Motor involved with this fiasco....

It wouldn't hurt to what boat they're in either.

k, sorry i ment to say through hulls, i just call them straight headers in my own mind.

the risers will still be in place.

engines are merc 350/volvo penta 280's in a Carter Safari.

Bond-O
please stop trying to spread that arguement out to other posts. Its none of your business, and i think i have a right to ask questions just like anyone else here. This thread has nothing related to that one, and if you are so insecure that you have to put others down to feel good about yourself then i feel truly sorry for you.

Whoever is STUPID enough to cut out LEGAL exhaust and run straight pipes deserves all the tickets and any problems with the cops he gets----please have enough beers to get over the limit in your state and go boating with that setup---and see what happens

Re: Converting to through hulls

What is the big deal with thru hull exhaust? I see a lot of jet boats with thru hulls, Yeah they are loud. So what? I don't get why people freak out when ever you try something a bit different? Seriously, if it works for him & the noise doesn't bother him then that's all that should matter.

Re: Converting to through hulls

Ya know, the guys building this boat are a couple of teenagers. They have taken on a huge project, apparently with little help or advise from anyone locally. How many members here would recommend that their teenage son partner with another teenager and buy a huge boat with not one but two bad motors? They're into it too deep now, lets try to help and forget that they may not ask the right questions and perhaps lack the communication skills to receive the help they need. I, for one, will help if I can.
