Cooling hose goes from 5/8 to 1 and 1/4

On my 233 MC-1 the cooling tube through the stern is 5/8. The hose to the engine water pimp is 1-1/4. There is a "home made?" reducer on the 5/8 tube. See picture. No where on any parts diagram do I see how this miss match is supposed to be addressed. What was the original setup?

Any thoughts??

place the enlarger on first, then place the 1 1/4 hose on, tighten clamp

Well, dah. But was that how Mercruiser intended?? Shade tree engineering!
