I own a 1969 85 Evinrude. I noticed the intake grates for the water pump on the lower unit need to be cleaned. i just bought the motor and when you look through, light can be seen, as well as debris. How are the grates removed? Do they the pop out or screw out or does the lower unit have to be taken apart? I don't want to break anything as parts are hard to find as most of you know! Any replies appreciated...Chris

Before you start doing anything on the engine , get the manual , you WILL need it :) .

You just bought the engine ?
#1 get impaller ( OMC nr. 385072 / Sierra 18-3044 ( 1969 85 hp))
#2 remove lowerunit clean it , replace impaller ( waterpump ), change oil in gear ( OMC tybe C /Premium blend ? )
#3 replace spark plugs .

#4 Get fresh gas befor you start the engine ( ad 2 % two-stroke oil )

This will take you 1 - 3 hours , and it is worth it :) .

Hi Chris. I second the idea of getting a manual, but with or without a manual always try the easy fix first. In the case of the intake screens, try using a wire brad or something similar to carefully reopen each of the holes in the screens. (You can indeed break them.) Having cleaned them out so water can pass through, try spraying any debris out with a stream of water. Actually, try cleaning with water before and after the little operation I was describing.

It isn't clear from your post what kind of service you are ready to undertake, but cleaning up the intake might be all you need for now. Thoroughly flush the motor periodically to keep the passages clean.

Good luck.
