Cooling System Question

No water from tell-tale when I got my 71 evinrude 60hp. Replaced impeller and seals, still nothing. Popped cover from thermostat, can pour water to the left of the tstat and have it flow nice. Everything else seems nice.

If the thermostat is closed, you get no tell-tale until motor is warm and tstat opens, right?

How hard should the spring be in the thermostat (say pushing it in with a screwdriver) and is that any indication of the tstat condition?

Also, how does one remove the tstat - does it twist, pull, other... mine seems quite stuck.

Thanks!

Re: Cooling System Question

JR....run a wire up the pee hole. It's probably plugged. If that fails, blow some compressed air back through it. Works for me.

You should have pee hole flow all the time when the engine is running.

I didn't think 71's had telltale holes.

I don't think the 71's had tell tales, either. You thermostat is probably just stuck with corrosion crud. Jiggle with it. It should just pull out eventually.

Re: Cooling System Question

My motor's got two holes just under the removable cover under the powerhead - I assumed they were pee holes. I ran copper wire up the pipes in the leg and they were clear, and I can't get it in the pee holes (?) because of the angle.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Cooling System Question

Well of course they didn't have tell tales back then......that's just me being dumb again.

Sorry JR....do what Jack suggests and replace the t-stat. It'll come out. Usually you can pop it out with a screwdriver.

Dumb OBJ....Dumb dumb..... :p

Re: Cooling System Question

JRuggiero, sounds like the holes you are refering to are exhaust relief holes. You won't see much if any exiting these two holes while running on muffs. If all is sound with your cooling system ,you'll see them discharging water at higher rpms with boat in water and head pressure on the exhaust.Actually I use to get a discharge out of my older 70 hp engine while flushing by placing the heels of both hands over the waterpump discharge ports just above the anti-ventilation plate.Use to do this to get a good flush back up the the exhaust reliefs since we run strictly in salt water.
