Why does my boat pee from the pee hole but still run hot? It is an 88 evinrude 40 hp. The thermostat has been removed. Should I replace the water pump and if so will this resolve the issue?

Re: Cooling

The pee stream only means that some water is being pumped, not necessarily enough water to cool the engine.
Give some history on your motor. Saltwater or freshwater? When was the last time you changeed the waterpump? Are you sure its overheating?
And make sure the thermostat is working or buy a new on but put one back in.

Re: Cooling

I dont know if it was used in salt water. The guy I got it from said he had it checked and was told the water pump was ok. I have removed the thermostat as it was nasty and corroded. The water pump i cant say when it was replaced. Also just above the thermostat is a red pressure relief valve. Should this be in place or can it be removed and still operate?

Re: Cooling

Well for starters you really should put a thermostat back in.......too cold of an engine temp isnt good either.

If you don't know when the water pump was replaced, its good practice to do so. I personaly wouldn't trust another mans word when it comes to the water pump, unless you can verify it was in fact serviced.

Do you know for sure its overheating? Do you have a temp gauge? A normal operating temp is warm enough that its really hard to tell if its actually overheating. If you don;t have a temp sensor go get some temp sticks and run the motor and see if its overheating.

If the cooling system has a good pump, good tstat, and isnt blocked somewhere it should cool the motor just fine

Re: Cooling

the temperature alarm keeps going off after running for awhile and it will not start until it cools off. I am going to replace the water pump tomorrow and try that. any thing else I should do while I have it apart?

Re: Cooling

There's not much else you can do , as far as the pump.

Just rebuild it , making sure the housing is good.

If you just get the impeller.

Why, are we answering the same question, in two threads.

Confusing at times, as well as a waste of peoples time.
