Cork float replacement?

Is there any other float that I can use in place of this cork float on this 1959 5.5hp Johnson?

The old float is pitted really bad, the motor would run but does tend to flood out. I about gave myself a hernia or pulled muscle one when pull starting the little motor no joke. I swapped to a electric drill to turn the motor over after it was done to late. Of coarse I ran out of gas when I thought I had the motor tuned just right so I shut it down for the day lol. I decided to take the carb off and it is clean, but the float I believe is my problem.

Could I possibly use a float out of a different motor all together?

Buy a carb kit from your local BRP dealer or possibly here at iboats. The OEM kit has a new float (about $25). I don't think they sell them individually, but I don't know for sure.

I have somebody local in mind that may possibly have a kit available ;). Although the other parts in the carb looks great, gaskets look like new. I guess buying a kit may be the only way to go. So far what I have found for carb kits on what sites I've been looking into do not have floats included in them. If all else fails I'll search these other sites for the parts. At least I know now that the kits may possibly have a better float included in them.

Hold on there. Of course the float is available separately. The original 375919 cork float is superceded by a new 396514 nitrophyl fuel-proof float. At your Johnson or Evinrude dealer.

Re: Cork float replacement?

Thanks for pointing that out FR.

You know everybody I talked to in person said "oh you can still use that float" and "it will not hurt anything". Then I read a little article here http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Troubleshooting.htm
that shed some light on the new age fuels against old cork floats. Which I found a little intersting and I know that the article isn't on boat motors but still the same concept.

As bad a shape that this float is in I'd be surprised if it wasn't hurting the performance of the motor. Like I said the carb was flooding out. Then I took an air house and gently blew off the float and pieces started to fly off of it lol.

I know for a fact that the one marina would half to order any parts for this motor (if they still can get the part I need), but as I mentioned earlier I think I have an ace up my sleeve that may come through for me.

Well, there you go. I shouldn't have been so lazy and just looked it up.

Sierra kits (aftermarket) don't have floats. You need the OEM part. Cork floats don't last forever. It never hurts to change them out.

I hear ya Wbeaton. Hopefully I can catch this guy at home after I come back from fishing in the morning or afternoon. He told me 9:30 would be a good time to come by but the lake is calling my name or maybe it's the fish :D.

This just came to mind, I could do another one to and dig through this boxes of parts I bought the other day and see if there is something in there by chance, I dread doing inventory on that stuff. That would be a heck of a note if I have the float new in the box out in my shed.
