correct tachometer for Evinrude 85hp

Looking to add a tach to my 77 evinrude 85hp. I can see how to wire it in but im not sure how to choose the right tach. Can an auto tach be made to work? how many pulses does this engine generate per revolution?

Auto tach won't work on a 2 stroke outboard. Your motor has a 12 pole stator and the switch will be set to either 6 or 12 depending on what brand you end up buying. Here is a Faria install PDF for rreference - https://fariabeede.com/site_manuals/IS0012aa.pdf

thanks for the tip. I ended up ordering a Faria 7k universal outboard tach. 2x the price of auto lol

Yeah i've noticed that. if its for a boat they add another 0 to the price lol

Boats and cars are different.------Example---The battery in a Cadillac might see the occasion bump from a pot hole.----That same battery in a boat might see bumps as if you were driving that Cadillac across a plowed field for a few hours.-----The marine battery has better construction I believe.

Fair enough plus whatever it costs to use corrosion resistant materials and waterproof parts.
