Could this be the starter??????

I think my motor is a 1972 model. It is a Chrysler 105 h.p. model number 1057HE. That's pretty much all I know about this boat AND motor. But I am fighting the problems that are obvious so I can get it on the water. My starter seems like it is dragging. The motor has great compression. First of all when I turn it over, the sprocket on the starter that catches the flywheel sticks and I have to help it back down and to top it off while trying to start it the flywheel only turns about a quarter turn. Can someone PLEASE help me figure this out so I can make my little girls happy- FAST!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?

Hi, Hawk.<br /><br />You probably have poor connections in your high current cables for the starter. Clean and reattach all large cables, with special attention to where the battery ground cable attaches to the engine block.<br /><br />If you plan on working on your engine, get a manual. In addition to JB's advice, try spraying some WD40 on the starter gear. Mine was doing the same thing and that fixed it.

The easiest way to trouble shoot this is to get out a set of jumper cables and run these directly from the battery to the starter connections. Be careful, because it will turn over of course. If this works, then it is your connections or wiring. If it is still weak it is most likely either the battery or the starter itself. Another thing you can do is jump it from a different battery, such as the one in your car while it's running. Then you'll know for sure you are getting enough voltage and that it isn't a battery problem.<br /> The only other thing it could be would be something major that is preventing the engine from spinning, ie: mechanical. Since you have checked the compression, I assume that the engine turns ok by hand. If you take all the spark plugs out, it should turn fairly easily without resistance. With the plugs in, you will feel resistance from the compression.<br /> Finally, you can it do the really old fashioned way and thread a rope around the flywheel and pull the engine by hand. I know it's 105 hp, but you should be able to do this, assuming the engine is in good working order. I've done it on a chrysler 120 OB without problems. Just make sure you put the rope on the correct direction to spin the engine the correct way!

i recently had a similar problem.starter would turn until it it a compression cycle then slow way don till it passed then turn good again until the next comp cycle.took it to a rotary electric shop who rebuilds starters alternaters and such, they had it rebuilt and ready by the next day. wroks great now cost was about $85 for parts and labor.

I had the same sticking proble at one time on an old starter, it would stat the boat and the gear would not disengage. Very hard on the starter! Took the gear assembly off the starter and cleaned it up removes burrs and such and lubricated with a light synthetic oil. never had the problem again. <br /><br />Now if the starter is engaging and stopping once you have turned for a bit, the you should probable look at the battery or the starter. Just had mine rebuilt again for $57. Pretty cheap, but ultimately found that my battery was causing my starter problems. <br /><br />Good luck and Happy boating!
