Yesterday we were pulling out at the river and a couple of guys were launching a 14 ft flat bottom aluminum jon boat.

They pushed it off the trailer and used a bow line to pull it over to the dock as it wouldn't start. One took the cowl off while the other went for tools. As the second guy got back the first said forget it they were taking on water.

They had a70hp tiller steer on the jon boat. I thought to myself, the engine not starting may have been for the best.

One guy did mention they had just put this together and were taking it out to try it.

I agree. Let me do some math:
70HP+14' jon=potential Darwin Award winners.

Oh yeah, it'll work, piece of cake, no problems!!!... especially since they didn't even check the boat for leaks before they rigged it... what could go wrong???

Yup, Darwin award candidate (posthumous).

Did they ask you to hold their beer?

Aw, C'mon guys! Here is a 10 footer with a 50 and a 14 footer with a 125. It doesn't necessarily become an accident looking for a place to happen. 'Course, if you jury rig it, that's a different story.

Frank, guys like you who know what you are doing can overpower a boat to make a racer, but not the typical boater, and not on a jon boat hull!
