Re: Coyotes in my back yard

yeah, after denting the neighbor's dog's head with the 22 - and that was only at about 100' - I started toting the 12 guage with 00 buck when I went on my rounds. I never did get a clean shot at a coyote though. They are smart and had many escape routes. I would plug one hole up and the next time I thought I had him, he'd just slip out another way. The one time I managed to get right on top of him and possibly could have shot him, my damn dog got in the way. I'm sure he thought he was helping...

I did try the stealthy sniper thing a few times, hiding out from pre-dawn until afternoon with the scoped .308, but of course on those days there wasn't a coyote to be seen anywhere.

I wouldn't mess with them at all except for the damage they do to the livestock. I lucked out for years, living side by side with them in peace, but they eventually figured out how tasty lamb and free range chicken was, and that was the end of the peace. They don't mess with the adult sheep though, although I'm sure they could pull it off if they ganged up on one. All I've ever lost to the coyotes were lambs and chickens.

Look at a H & R single shot http://www.hr1871.com/Firearms/Rifles/youth.aspx or a Rossi single shot in .223 They are cheap and ammo is very cheap. A .243 would be a better choice due to it being more versitle and can have a 2nd duty as a cheaper deer rifle in some areas. (most places do dot permit a .223 to be used on deer). I purchase and use one in .223 with a heavy barrel and more than accurate at 200 yards.

We have alot of coyotes here in VT. Very elusive and they can run the adult whitetails down when it snows heavy here. I have to admit they have quite the vocabulary of sounds at night that near mimic a child screaming to a nice howling. In packs they make alot of noise.

The other alternative is a Road Runner! The coyotes will be too busy chasing him and buying Acme Dynomite to bother the deer!! d:)

I kinda with JB, coyotes keep the rodents down why kill them.Any time ive ever been around them thay just run away and ive been around them alot. A coyote couldent take down a grown deer even if it wanted to. A fawn yes but that is life in the bush.If you are going to kill one use a 222 it will do a clean kill.
Dont get me wrong i love to hunt any thing from big game "moose, deer, elk and sheep"down to upland water foul and i would love to try to get a wild turkey.
I live by the rule if your not going to eat it dont kill it.

Re: Coyotes in my back yard

Just last night my basset hound and the coyotes were howling at eachother. :) At night they come from the surrounding hills down the suburban sidewalks to the abandoned lot behind me. I've actually seen one stop and look both ways before entering the street. :^

Re: Coyotes in my back yard

Coyote don't bother adult deer much but they sure love fawns.
About four months ago my wife and I were hiking in the foothills.
There is a lot of coyote in this part of the country. And there is a lot of deer and other wildlife too. We were in an area that doesn't see much human activity.
We were walking down a trail that was in brushy terrain. As we came to the edge of a clearing we stoped to take a look around. About 50 yards to our left was a doe and a newborn fawn standing still watching us. She would look our direction then look away the opposite direction.
Across the clearing 300 yards away we saw 3 coyote trotting our way. As they got closer the doe actually walked with her fawn closer to us within 20 yards and kept her eye on the coyote. We stayed perfectly still because we wanted to see what was going to happen. As the coyote got closer the doe and fawn stayed within 20 yards as they walked past us to where they were now behind, putting us between them and the coyote.
When the coyote got to about 50 yards from us they slamed on the brakes, stood for a couple seconds, looked us over, and ran as fast as they could to the left out of sight. The doe with fawn started to browse.
We continued into the clearing towards the area were the coyotes came from. The doe and fawn followed us across the clearing staying within 20 yards the whole way until we reached the brush on the otherside when they parted company.
And again the area where we were doesn't have tame deer by any stretch. That momma doe plainly made a logical calculation.
