Cracked exhaust manifold... how bad?

I have just found that I have a crack in my port side exhaust manifold. Engine# 0D843814. I am not sure how long it has been there, but this is my first year with the boat and I still learning my way around the engine. By the looks of the rust it may have been a while. I have used the boat this season without any problems, no water in the oil. The boat was supposedly been winterized professionally and maintained at a marina by the previous owner. How bad does it look and how urgently do I need to replace it?

it looks like the beginning of surface corrosion.
Are you leaking water out of it?

If you look closely you can actually see the crack there too. I have not had it running after discovering the crack today. Maybe I will run it in the driveway tomorrow and see if it is leaking water. Am I good for now if no leak?

On the outside, it be can seen. A bit of water in the bilge you will get ... Inside the crack?... Fill your engine with water it will....

You can only see the crack on the outside of the manifold... You can't see if it's cracked inside, and if it is, then that will fill your engine with water. :)rolleyes: Have you never seen "Return of the Jedi"?)

You said you checked the oil and it was good.
you can usually get a minimum of three years out of your manifolds( provided you flush your motors)
take a awl to the spot and see if you can remove the corrosion. get down to good iron.
and if its just surface you need to get it under control or it will spread fast.

Many times; I think Yoda has more hair than you.......and much more than me.:embarassed:

Personally, I would replace the exhaust manifolds and not worry about it 1 day leaking internally then possibly causing.....

Me too... That crack, especially where it is, looks a lot like freeze damage... Without taking the manifold off and checking it... A crap shoot...

My guess too. Had the same happen with winterization and not poking some wire in the port to clear rust. Water stopped up and she froze over winter. Replace exhaust and keep an eye on oil (for water).

Oh my, I didn't see he hailed from Canada. My knowledge is strictly Southern Florida and Caribbean.

Yeah, apparently it gets a bit cool up there... Being from Perth I don't get to do all that winterising stuff either... I use my boat 12 months of the years... :D :D :D :D (Cue Bondo, with his 'walking across the lake' comments  ;) )

Looks like a drop of water in the picture! It's freeze damage I'll bet, the crack is pretty clear. It may last awhile, maybe a good winter project to get it off and see what the total damage is.

Re: Cracked exhaust manifold... how bad?

Thanks for the recommendation guys. I think that I will just run the engine this season to winterize it (maybe take the boat out for an hour if I can find the time before it gets cold) and replace the manifold in the spring.

But you guys really need to stop rubbing in the "boating 12 months per year" thing... it's really depressing! haha

I had an identical crack. :( it never hurt my motor, but got worse and worse, and i attempted to have it welded, and it still leaked. just change it for the peace of mind....
