Cracking open the 35 'rude

Hey urvry body! I gotta replace a "roller bearing assembly (#14 in the crank pic)" and "seal (#15 in the pic)". I got the flywheel and plate off so i can see it, and have been told that I can just loosen some connecting bolts to barely crack the case open, enough to pull out the crap and put in the new stuff. Does this sound OK? Should I be worried about doing serious damage by doing it this way (quick-fix)? Its a 1977 35 horse evinrude, and it ran fine till one day it went from great to kaput over the course of maybe 20-30 minutes of running it in the river. Took the flywheel and plate off, saw that there was oil sprayed all over, and saw that the seal was damaged. This is actually the same motor Tashasdaddy helped me out with to get running again (for a while)about a year ago-thanks again. I figured ya'll would be reliable consultation on this, thanks for yer time! I'm not sure what bolts I would loosen, if this is in fact a good idea, so thats what the case pic is for.

There are dowels holding the bearings in place and opening the case is the only way to remove the bearing. Once the case is cracked, the seal is broken, the case must be opened all the way, cleaned and sealant reapplied...And once the case is open, there will be more things to replace..you know, "one thing always leads to another!"

Get a manual and follow the procedures.

Oh ya...what makes you think the bearing needs to be replaced?? Upper seals can be replaced separately from the bearing without opening the case! Do not open the case to replace the seal.

don't try splitting the crankcase without removing the intake manifold. There are two hex bolts in there as well

Thanks guys for the input...@mas, we got the top seal out, but we noticed the bearing, I believe its a pin bearing, was considerably damaged by our tomfoolery, atleast on the top portion. That "seal" on top of that pin bearing seems very wussy, and wouldn't withstand the pressures involved, so im guessing there was a failure in the bearing, so theres gas leakage, the seal just gave after a little while. Does that sound right? My motor had a topkill blowout?

Well...if the bearing is damaged..it's gotta come out. Spend a little money and buy an OEM OMC manual...best money you'll spend.

Thanks mas. I have the manual, but I had to check what a mechanic said I could do, I thought it sounded risky...better do this one full-assed. thanks again.
