Hi folks, yes yet another newbie boat person to pick all you seasoned vets brains. DryFloat? Well I thought it appropriate as I live on the desert here in Tucson Arizona

But guess what!? I was rolling through the local craigslist the other day at the office and under the free column what do I see?FREE SPEEDBOAT. Ok ok, how many of you would walk away from that? Here I am a total landlubber but I just couldn?t say no. So I called and sure enough the lady?s husband passed away and she wants it out of the front yard. His ?project? boat was just that, a project. Turned out to be a Sidewinder out of Anderson California. I have yet to pick up the engine from a local marine shop where her husband had dropped it off and I don?t even know what motor I have but it's supposed to run. Another problem I have is no title and the guy at the Marine shop seemed real negative about this. Like he wouldn?t even touch a boat with no title hmmmm. Sure it may be more difficult to deal with Arizona Game and Fish on this but certainly it can be done and my wife is a God at handling things like this so I didn?t let that bother me all so much.

Anyway, this boat has a sound hull but that?s about it. All of the controls, and everything to the motor needs to be tied back in and such. It really needs completely put back together. Someone had ?hammered? (as in terrible job of glass etc.) in the transom and I have to totally redo this trainwreck. Anyway, I?m not all to worried. By trade I am a journeyman electrician and I grew up wrenching cars, building engines etc. My work ethic is professional and if I can?t do it right I don?t do it at all. Certainly with the wealth of information here and in other places on the internet I can get this lil speedboat in the water again without dropping more money on it than it?s really worth. I?m a bit concerned with all of the cables and controls but no doubt if I take it step by step I can figure it out.

Anyway, my brother in Washington that works around charter deep sea fishing boats laughed and called a boat a hole the water that one throws money into. Am I really wasting my time here? Will this boat simply need to much money for what it is? I?m not worried about my labor on this, just parts. I keep thinking that if I just take the most minimal approach to this we will be having a blast on the local lake with it someday. What do you folks think? Thanks for letting me go on?great forum that you have here and I hope that y?all won?t mind my constant stupid questions. :)

You got yourself a great deal there! A good little speedboat the Sidewinder. How can you go wrong? It shouldn't require a lot of money to get going, good luck!

Nice looking ?whole in the water?, I?ve seen worse, in my back yard as a matter of fact. Sure it will cost a bit but when you get done and with some the advice available here you will have something you will be proud of, keep us up to date on the progress.Welcome to I-boats.:)

make sure you get a "bill of sale" or a paper noterized from the lady that she gave the boat to you. Make sure the hull # is on the noterized bill of sale. this will make it a little easier to get a title for the boat if your state requires one. If you show this to your mechanic he should calm down a little.

Hull number hmmmmm See dumb landlubber here. Where is the "hull number"? LOL I can tell one where to find VIN numbers all day long but put me in a boat and I dummy up, sigh...

Thanks folks for your positive input!

If it is after 1972, the hull number should be on the top right of the transom. (the transom is the flat part at the stern [back] of the boat)

Hmmmm no hull number on the transom here. Only a **** poor attempt to make a repair by someone that didn't have a clue, unreal gezzzzz. There seems to be a previous registration number up front on the bow however. Oh well, I'll sort it all out once I talk to Fish and Game and understand what they want me to do.

Yup, you're up to your knees with that transom...nothing that can't be fixed with a little persistence though!

Do a lot of planning and educating yourself and ask lots of questions, we'll be happy to give you links to resources for material, and there are really good picture tutorials on things like replacing that transom with new wood or a product called "seacast" .

Heck, I paid 300 for the boat in my shareproject link plus more for the trailer its on and a few other miscellaneous parts, and I don't even have a motor!

I recommend that you do NOT spend any money on it until you get it registered and titled, if your state requires boat titles. I just went through the same scenario last year. You are more qualified than most boat owners to do a first class repair/restoration of the Sidewinder. The experts, which I am not, on this forum can and will guide you through all the levels of repairs to the boat, motor, trailer, et al. Good luck and keep us posted on what happens.

Willyclay... great minds think alike. Our state does require boat titles and this kid ain't doin nutin until I know I can handle this affair believe me. It's my understanding that it's kind of a pain in the butt here in Arizona if you have an abandoned, no title boat. So we will see.

Can't thank all you guys enough for the positive encouragement and warm welcome to this site. Just what I was hoping for! Lord knows when I'll get to things on this boat as I have a business to run and many other projects around the property which are on my plate. But get to it I will and I bet with some help from friendly folks here this boat will be floating once again!

You are way ahead of me already - unfortunately, I did not find this forum until way after I started my project!
She looks sweet and hey, the price was right.
