Re: Crankcase Hole in my 1997 200 Evinrude
Got her apart. Here is what I found:
-My theory as to what happened was right on. #2 piston skirt broke in many pieces and threw a piece into rod end.
-crank = good
-crankcase = very bad, I found 2 other places where the same hole happened in #5 rod end area and they welded a patch and put J/B weld like stuff on the inside of the patch to smooth it out.
-block = bad, #2 cylinder scored bad at bottom. (i did not see with the heads off looking from outside). The bad news is that this block has already been bored .020 over. No more room to bore again to fix #2 unless I resleeve. It won't be worth resleeving with the other issues it has
-pistons = 5 good, 1 bad with broken skirt missing wrist pin clips (this may have caused it)
-rings = 6 good
-rods = 6 good
-rod bearings = 6 good
-wrist pin bearings = all bad, what a joke, #2 cage disentegrated, different looking bearings in some pistons, missing thrust washers in 1/2 the pistons
-main bearings = good
Somebody obviously rebuilt this thing and did a crappy job. that is evident with the wrist piin bearings and thrust washer missing. some don't even look right. The block is toast it is going in the garbage. I am going to part her out and buy another used engine. It does not make economic sense to rebuild this one. We are talking minimum $1500 in parts to rebuild and I should be able to find an 10 year old EFI used for $2500. With about $1000 worth of parts off mine, my net would be $1500. So in the end it will cost me $1500 to rebuild or $1500 (net) to buy a used motor that is newer and better. This is a no brainer now. I have made my decision to buy another engine.
