Crankshaft problem

I recently acquired a Wizard WD3 in good shape, except the threads on top of the crankshaft are kinda buggered up. Someone apparently lost the nut that holds the flywheel down tight and managed to cross thread the top of the shaft while trying to thread a ******* fitting on there as a flywheel nut. Can I rework the shaft with a tap and die kit and get it back to normal? Only the top 1/4 to 1/2 inch of the shaft threads are buggered up...threads below this look quite normal and I probably have a correct flywheel nut lying around in the shop. Any thoughts on the best way to proceed? Anyone know the shaft/thread diameter for this little Mercury? Any help/ideas are much appreciated.

Re: Crankshaft problem

Take the shaft to a machine shop and THEY can fix the threads easily. You (or me) could bugger them up worse. :D

-W

Re: Crankshaft problem

I have cleaned them up on the motor. I will have to get the die size when I get home. anyway, you will be OK. If your crank is out it will even be easier.
