Crappy Idle Help

Hey Fellas,<br /><br />Have a Merc 1989-1990 V200, purchased last year. Took it in for service (bog under load), had the carbs rebuilt, new fuel pump diaphrams put in, new plugs, sinc-n-linc, new stator (Stupid Mechanic, kept the old one). Ran fine after wards...it never did idle quite right though. I just thought is was bad gas and theres was 50 gals in her so I decided to run it through. That was towards the end of the season.<br /><br />This season, fresh gas, I have had here out 5 - 6 times and she runs strong, but shes getting progressivly worse on idle and starting. The hole shot is there, I can get it up on plane....5200-5300 rpm no problems, sounds great under load... but darn when I cut the motor off its a pain in the butt to get her fired up again. I have to put her in neutral and give her half throttle to get fired up and then after about 20 seconds at 1100 rpms I can back her down into neutral, but she idles like total crap sputtering...shaking @ 800 rpms maybe. Today I was holding her at like 1500-1700 rpms trolling looking at my fish cheater and she just wanted to run crappy sputtering trying to stall and what not..give her gas and she goes right up?<br /><br />I haved searched the forums.... I dont think its a carb adjustment, seems to get worse little by little? Electrical problems would just die right away? Im getting fuel when I put the hammer down, could it be fuel? Reeds maybe?<br /><br />Comp 125-123 psi all 6 cyl.

Have you did a plug read ? looking for a cylinder thats not firing right.<br />Compression chk?<br />Changed a fuel filter?<br />Do you have a manual for your engine?<br />Finding these things can be a hair pulling exp.<br />But need to eliminate the obivious first.<br />I would look at carbs and idle circuit first after looking at plugs.<br />Rich

update...<br /><br />So I started her up today in my driveway...poking around at the bleed hoses and what not seeing if it is something simple, and I noticed everything is saturated with gas.... then i see a bolt on the reed block cover spurting bubbles.... I grabbed some pliers and gave it a twist and the bolt head broke off... wood... WTF?!!???!? some idiot broke the top bolt in the powerhead and rammed a dowl in there to stop the gas??? <br /><br />I will go out on a limb and say this is my problem...<br /><br />So do I take the carbs off, take the reed block cover off drill out the broken bolt, replace the reeds while im there... or... just try and drill it out without taking it all apart?<br /><br />What you guys thinks?

I think I'd be quizzing the cob who worked on your engine last yr.<br />Well I may be a little harsh,but your lucky you didn't go up in smoke <br />Do the job right and have piece of mind <br />remove carbs.Isn't that suppose to be a stud in the case not a bolt?<br />Rich

If you can get a drill in there I would try that first and use an easy out "srew extractor". If you get crooked or it wont go, Take her apart as to not do any dammage. If I can get get a good shot at the center of the broken stud, screw extractor will get it done with out having to breaking the motor down.<br /><br />JK

replacing your fuel filter with a one piece disposable filter like the factory installs would be a good idea. units like yours tend to allow air leaks into fuel system. i remove every one that enters my shop no matter how new.
