Re: Cutting up tires

This sounds like one those things that seems easy but is as actually a PIA. It will be worth the price to have a shop do it and avoid the aggravation.

Its a slippery slope. Today you are paying someone to dismount a junk tire, tomorrow you are standing along the side of the road holding your purse while you pay someone to change your flat. :bolt:

LOL I don't have a purse, my AAA card is in my wallet.

Have you tried a tire iron after the lugs nuts have been put on with an air gun? Even with my alum wheels on my truck they are only supposed to be torqued to 95 lb/ft, but it sure feels like a whole lot more.

And if it is raining, I might rather tip the AAA guy.

Some jobs are satisfying or more cost effective or more convenient to do yourself and some aren't. I'll change a tire instead of waiting for AAA but I'm not going to dismount a tire and cut it up.

LOL, I love the legs of a simple thread like this :D My neighbor insists that a die grinder will zip them right off. We'll play with one for fun and let you guys know. I have to try just one of these ideas to prove I don't carry a purse  :)

LOL. Have fun and report back how it worked. The only time I ever tried to cut a tire bead with a power tool, it involved a lot of noxious black smoke.

Re: Cutting up tires

I removed a couple light truck tires from nasty old aluminum rims to scrap them. I ended up using a diamond blade on a 7 1/4" circular saw to go through the edge of the rim and the HUGE steel bead cable. Couldn't get a bolt cutter to fit in there, not sure if it would cut it anyways. A die grinder will not zip it right off whatsoever. I am sure of that from the experience I had. I am a seriously cheap guy and I would never do that again. :frusty:
