Man, I tell ya, here in Indiana its gettin really hard to find any private land to hunt without having to lease it. I lost a great piece of private land to an expensive hunt lease 2 years ago.
Don't get me wrong, I understand many land owners reasons for leasing their land, but I can remember when a persons friendship, and a lot of hard work around the farm were enough to secure permission to hunt.
Its really frustrating to me, because again, its the rich people who are gonna win out. If I was rich, I could afford one of them expensive hunt leases, since I am not, I am forced to hunt what is left.
10 years ago in Indiana, hunt leases were unheard of. I know in some states, this has always been common practice, its just something new around here.
It seems that nobody wants to give you permission anymore unless you are willing to dish out some $$$.

Just venting..........Thanks. :)

I have to admit, this amazes me.
If you have a valuable asset, would you give it away?
If there is anything more in line with conservative Republican values, it is free markets, and is there any more evidence of a free market than charging what the market will bear for what assets you own and wish to market?

More public lands are the answer, of course, but that takes money in the form of taxes to maintain them, and make up for the reduction of tax revenue producing property it represents. Heavens to Betsy, you are about to sound like a liberal if you are not careful!!!

you can still buy un-improved wooded land round
here for $500-$1000/acre, so we never see land leased.

Re: Dang hunt leases!!!!

I have plenty of free options when it comes time to hunt here (for a few years anyway). however when I was in south texas I nearly gave up deer hunting because the necesity for a lease and Personally I really wasnt into shooting them over a barrel of corn. However the growing practice of leases here really concerns me because what i saw in texas. Currently here the trend is hunters purchasing woodland to hunt this is somewhat disturbing too. When the lease prices start to get really out of wack then you see the corprate leases and the price they get for prime spots is abosulutly astounding---right up there with health insurance as far as cost(per gun). Really something when you start looking for a place of employment based on there policy of lease use.

People are leasing land because more and more public lands are going to "no hunting".

Even if hunting is allowed on public lands, it usually is not maintained for maximum game production. That is not politically correct.

People that lease land are just trying to preserve the ability to hunt. Don't expect government to do it.

I would suggest you join a coop that leases a tract. Many coops are very affordable.

One of the reason I pay so much for a non-resident Pa hunting license is because there is no land in New Jersey to hunt or its is posted and owned by a gun club. Sure there is some public land but if you want to live to a ripe old age you don't go there because you feel as if your walking around with a bull-eye on your coat.

NJ permits you to death also, I could easily pay $150-$200 dollars on licenses and permits and then another $350-$400 to join a gun club.

The $150 I spend for my Pa License include muzzle loader, spring/fall turkey, small game and doe tag. Where I deer hunt has 28,000 acres of state game lands, where I turkey hunt is over 200,000 acres thats the state forest land in Potter, Tioga, and other counties. Not 20 mins from home I have 1,000 acres for small game, or I drive 45mins and I have 15,000 acres of state game lands or park lands.

I think the do gooders would love to see no land available would be another argument for gun control.

I'll tell you what gun control is, it's hitting the 10 ring every time. :)

Re: Dang hunt leases!!!!

Sorry PW, I guess I just longed for the days when a friendly handshake, and a lot of hard work meant more than it does now.
I have allowed certain individuals to hunt my small tract of land only because they were good people, and whenever I needed something, they were more than willing to help. Must be kinda odd to you PW, to see someone "giving away" a valuable asset like that.....huh, but I am considered a pretty nice person around here, something more people should try.
If you don't hunt, and haven't experienced what I am talking about, how can you comment?
Bottom line is, I am correct, the really prime hunting land goes to the highest bidder, and because I am not rich, my children will not be able to hunt some of the land I hunted in the past.
Now, I have to admit, it amazes me how this PW fellow tries to turn every post into a political thread.............Amazing.

MW, if you don't mind, I will send you a check so you can purchase some of that land for me :D , It costs way too much around here. :(

Around here you'll see a lot of those "leased hunting" signs, but most of them do not lease the land to any hunter. It gives them more power to prosecute when they catch someone out there. I have 15 acres next to a 15,000 acre land locked game/hunting area, I let friends and family (of course) hunt there for free. (as long as they keep it clean). Had a man haul out some gravel for the drive and let him hunt there, he let me have the gravel at his cost and fuel. Just a little give and take Americans helping Americans!
Richard

Rwise, you hit the nail on the head, Americans helping Americans. Not many people think like that anymore.

Agreed, times have changed.

However, there are a couple things to think about.

1. We have gone away from being a rural society.

2. We have gone from 170 million people in 1950 to over 250 million in 2000.

3. Anti hunting groups have succeeded in changing societies perception of hunting. Government officials are usually anti hunting or listen to special interest groups that are.

I fear the same is happening with those that do not understand the pleasures of pleasureboating and fishing. BEWARE-the jury is assembling on that one. Don't be caught sleeping!

Re: Dang hunt leases!!!!

djohns, a coop? Can you give me some more information? I apologize if this seems like a stupid question, but remember, this leasing land stuff is new to me, and I have been hunting for about 25 years now.

I agree with what you have said djohns. I guess for many years now we have been immune to hunting leases in the area where I live. Let me say that I don't necessarily disagree with hunting leases, its just frustrating to me that you could spend years hunting a place, work very hard helping with various chores around the farm, treat the landowner like gold, and think that you have developed a friendship, only to have some rich yahoo wave some money around, then you get tossed like a bad habit. I have had it happen. I understand its his land, but whatever happened to treating people decent? Its a shame. :( I did nothing but treat the landowner with respect, but in the end, it was the "not so rich nice guy" that lost out.
It didn't used to be that way. Sometimes change really blows.

You had better have deep pockets if you want to hunt in Texas. Its big business now, with places making more off the hunting lease than the livestock that roam it.

It's not worth it to me. I'll find a cheapo place to hunt and not see anything, but have fun anyways.

Ken

Hmmm...

Why do you presume I don't hunt? What anywhere gave you that idea? It isn't true, BTW. I was at one time even a member of a duck club that had a lease on an area in the Skagit River delta in Northwest Washington State. There was a nearby public area, but with so many hunters that felt compelled to blast away at ducks when they got within 100 yards, and watch so many wounded birds lost, it lost its appeal to me.

And public lands should be, and most are managed for many things, and not just for single uses. Whether it is wildlife, of timber production, or anything else.

Rather than just complaining about, and finding something to blame, like "political correctness" or something, I'd suggest investigating what biologists and ecologists in an area are reporting, and why they chose the individual designations they use, be they "no hunting" or whatever. You'd be surprised at the thoroughness for the most part that the resource is studied, and the seriousness that these professionals take their responsibility...

And the vast majority of them are hunters as well.

Re: Dang hunt leases!!!!

I also have been booted out of some land i have hunted for 15 years. I lost it to some big town hunters. they started leasing the land about 4 years ago. they move in about a week before season starts(gun season) with their travel trailers, 4x4's, and four wheelers. 'do not get me wrong, i am not saying that all big city or rich hunters are like this, but this group has no idea what the word 'hunting' is. they run around on the fourwheelers and 4x4's running any deer within 1/2 a mile to the next county. I have a small piece of land about 25 acres on one side of thier lease. it is in the family so will hunt it till i die. it is probably best that they moved in. the small plot of land is one of the best funnels i have ever seen. i have more luck here than in the past.

I also have a few other plots of land that i usuall help the farmers to keep my hunting priviledges. i will cut them a cord of wood for the winter or help with moving cattle wvery once in a while, or things like this. I just hope that this will last.

Landowners nearly everywhere are finding out the hunting and fishing resources have much more than the esoteric value, that hunters and fisherman enjoyed free for years.

Private Montana ranch land is going to outfitter leasees. The MT DOW loves it because they do not have to worry as much about enforcement, since the outfitters keep a "close" eye on all harvested game.

Prime Colorado trout habitats are being leased to clubs or outfitters. They practically rod-whip you if you go near them.

Hunting and fishing are getting like every other sport - "SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!"

I guess that's why the hunting and fishing TV channels are so popular - what a drag.

Marty
