Darn near got killed yesterday...

Yesterday on my drive home I had an experience that left me shaking for 10 minutes or so.

I was on an interstate highway, and having just merged on from another interstate on the left, put on my blinker and moved to the far right hand lane.

I could see in my rear view that there were a big dump truck (4 axle, as I later saw) in the right lane, and a tractor trailer in the center lane of the now 3 lane highway. Both trucks were about 150 plus yards behind me when I moved to the far right lane, and I kept a steady 60-62 mph speed. I looked in the rear view again moments later and to my surprise, both trucks had closed in a lot, meaning they were not just doing 75 or so, probably much faster. This seemed odd, so I kept an eye on them as I drove and the dump truck was closing very fast. Really fast, really really fast. I realized that the dump truck and tractor trailer were going flat out.

When the dump truck came within about 20 or so yards of me and showed no signs of slowing, I tapped the brakes to my lights went on. No change in his speed and he was closing fast, and when I was afraid he would hit me I had to swerve on to the shoulder so he could pass. Probably came within 3 feet of the rear corner of my car, still running flat out, and passed me doing 75 easy while doing a quick lane change to just squeek in front of the tractor trailer. Meanwhile I am driving down the shoulder at 60 mph with road crap kicking up all over my car and making sure I don't hit the guard rail or some big piece of crap on the side of the road.

After he passed, I could see light under the right hand tires and he made the lane change so fast the truck was rocking over as he tried to keep the center lane. Probably had 8" air space under those tires easy.

I got back in my lane, as there were no cars behind the dump truck. Neither the dump truck or the tractor trailer sounded their horns, flashed lights or made any indication that anything was out of the ordinary. I think these two truck drivers were drag racing down the highway.

I was going to take off and follow the dump truck to get his plate and give him a piece of my mind, but I realized I just survived being crushed, and if these two truck drivers are driving this way, I should just let them go.

So I did. They both hauled off doing probably 80 plus MPH as I kept a steady 60 or so and watched them weave through early light (3:30pm) rush hour traffic.

What jerks. No horns, no lights, run me off the road IN THE SLOW LANE!!! COME WITHIN FEET OF CRUSHING ME IN MY CAR!!!!

I don't know what was going through their minds, but it sure wasn't the safety of the other people on the road.

Glad to hear all is ok. That is one time to use the cell phone while driving, call the law, give all the info, maybe they are up ahead and can at least give them a speeding ticket.

Were you on a down-hill? Any chance it was a runaway? (Like did you pass the wreckage later on a curve?)

Mark, glad you're ok. Sounds like you did some good defensive driving there.

Those reckless drivers need their CDLs or whatever revoked for playing stupid games like that. Too bad you couldn't get a license # or anything to go by.

No, it was on a flat stretch of highway.

Good thing to do in those situations if possible,
Get the company name, truck ID or license plate.

Then call the company and report the driver.
If it's a reputable company, they won't tolerate drivers performing like that.

My father was a long haul semi driver. There have been a few times where people called the company on him. After each call, his company would pull the driver into the office and have a review of the incident. Most times put on probation. Too many calls in the period of time will get you suspended or fired. Depending on the incidents.

In most places, you can call the state police by dialing the * character and a couple of digits. I'd have done that in a heartbeat.

YOu can do that as well. Don't know about other states, But here in WI the State Patrol doesn't have a sense of humor on things like that.

Mark,
Glad you made it through that unscathed and good job on keeping an eye on those swiftly closing trucks.

I was surprised how shaken up I was. I don't think I would have fared well if I went off "half cocked" after those guys. Do wish I had taken a plate number.

I don't get it. Are you calling the HP directly? I'm a little slow. ;)

Re: Darn near got killed yesterday...

I would have gotten on their tail, and on the horn to 911. I know I would have because I've done it.

Almost got hit by a drunk one night. He sped up and I followed, and got on the phone. He slowed down, and I stayed behind him. He pulled over and I parked about 200 feet behind him. He got out and started walking, and I slowly followed. He walked into a filling station, with the HP right behind him.

He was successfully charged with DUI, even though he was 1/4 mile from the car when he was arrested. The tape of my conversation with the dispatcher during the incident slam dunked the case.

Now, I don't tattle every time someone plays a little, or even offends me while driving, but when lives are at stake, I take action.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Dont do that. Just get out of the way.^^^^^^^^^^^

This time it was a couple retards that were trying to kill each other.
Next time it could be a truck with no brakes or the driver is unconsious and not able to slow down. 80,000 lbs will crush you like a bug.
I have 1.5 million miles driven in a big truck with no accidents or tickets. And about once a month i see some morons in trucks driving like that. I always wonder how they got a CDL in the first place.

Glad that you had the presence of mind to move to the shoulder and not panic. Like my dad used to say, "you have to drive for you and for every idiot out there". Also gald that it turned out good for you.

Glad you're ok. That's odd though, typically truck drivers are the safest ones on the road. Must have been an exeption.

Biffle fan is 1000% correct. Just get the hell out of the way. I have well over 3 million miles in trucks. I would have called 911 and stayed well in back of them until a LEO showed up. That behavior is absolutely unexcusable.

Glad you survived. You'd certainly be missed in these forums. Course, if I knew I was in your will to receive your beautiful MFG boat if you were to, you know, somehow die, well ............................ ;)

Glad to hear that you made it out of the situation.

I've been in that situation. I just nailed the gas to pull away from them. They probably knew there wasn't any law enforcement in the immediate area and was making up some time. I too will sometimes take advantage of the trucker speeding to make up time.
