Well, not all my fingers. But I can tell you that these 20 -50 lbs Snapping Turtles are all over my yard this weekend. Seems this is the time that the females lay their eggs, and we get some big moma-jamming turtles waking across your yard. They go to the gardens and dig a hole and drop the eggs. Kind of like an alligator.
If you are not familiar with the snapping turtles in the NJ area, I can tell you that the big ones are lighting fast, and can bite the end off a broom handle off in a blink of an eye. Been there done that.
I worry about the kids and the dogs. They think these big fat turtles are slow. No way! They are like lightning. Poke one in the butt with your foot, and they will spin around like a top and bite off a big chunk of your shoe. Maybe even take two or three toes, depending on the size of the turtle.
A turtle with a head as wide as you shoe will take off half your foot with no problem at all. Your dog will be missing a leg or half its face.
They are bad news. I just let them go. I show the turtles to the kids, and tell them how dangerous they are. The pond in my back yard is full of them.
I used to sit on my deck with a Remington 22 semi-automatic and scope and shoot the big ones in the head when they came into the mowed grass area. If they stay in the two acre pond/woods area, they were safe.
When you have toddlers, you got to shoot the snappers that walk in the yard.
Now my kids are older, and the turtles should be safe.
