Well, not all my fingers. But I can tell you that these 20 -50 lbs Snapping Turtles are all over my yard this weekend. Seems this is the time that the females lay their eggs, and we get some big moma-jamming turtles waking across your yard. They go to the gardens and dig a hole and drop the eggs. Kind of like an alligator.

If you are not familiar with the snapping turtles in the NJ area, I can tell you that the big ones are lighting fast, and can bite the end off a broom handle off in a blink of an eye. Been there done that.

I worry about the kids and the dogs. They think these big fat turtles are slow. No way! They are like lightning. Poke one in the butt with your foot, and they will spin around like a top and bite off a big chunk of your shoe. Maybe even take two or three toes, depending on the size of the turtle.

A turtle with a head as wide as you shoe will take off half your foot with no problem at all. Your dog will be missing a leg or half its face.

They are bad news. I just let them go. I show the turtles to the kids, and tell them how dangerous they are. The pond in my back yard is full of them.

I used to sit on my deck with a Remington 22 semi-automatic and scope and shoot the big ones in the head when they came into the mowed grass area. If they stay in the two acre pond/woods area, they were safe.

When you have toddlers, you got to shoot the snappers that walk in the yard.

Now my kids are older, and the turtles should be safe.

Man, Mark, you should be in eating heaven! Go catch 'em, put them in a big barrel and change the water every few hours. This will clean them out and prepare them for the table. After a couple days in clean water they are ready to kill, butcher and prepare for supper! YUM! Grilled turtle, deep fried turtle, turtle stew, turtle soup, cajun turtle. If there are that many turtle, go have some fun and freeze some for later! I am jealous! I ate most of the turtles out of our creek/swamp/pond. Gotta wait a few years for them to come back ...

We had one come through the yard the other day, aprox. 24" dia. He was a small one. I showed him to the admiral and she suggested I help him across the yard, thinking they move slow. I told her to just keep a eye on him and watch, well she got busy for a min or two and when she looked back it was gone. She went out to the road and looked and it was across the road and halfway through the neighbors yard, I asked her, still think turtles move slow. Lol I agree with aspeck, turtles is some GOOD EATS.

In honor of the 4th of July and all the grilling traditions, I thought I would resurrect this post with a picture sent to me by xtraham ...

BBQTurtle.jpg

Handmade ground beef patties, topped with sharp cheddar cheese, wrapped in a bacon weave.

The next step, add hotdogs as the heads, legs with slits for toes and tail.

Next step. Place on the grill and cover loosely with foil and grill to perfection.

A little crispy, not too crunchy...just how a turtle should be, no?

We would do that too, but also feed them table scraps for a week or two.
Really improves the taste even more when they are on a "good" diet.

Corn feed makes them really sweet and yummy!
