Dating Johnson 4HP

Hi All
New to the forum. I`ve recently picked up a couple of Johnson 4hp engines to tootle around in my 3.41RAB sib.

1 model 49B37D SER B021549
1 model 4BR79D SER B084802

Can anyone give me an idea of when they were made.

Also, knowing nothing about them, how do you select drive. There is no forward engage lever anywhere. I am assuming there is some kind of slipper clutch ?

I'm not sure what the first motor is - the model number doesn't seem to follow any information that I have. The second one is pretty close to a number for a 1979 4hp Johnson.

You motors don't have neutral or reverse p its forward only and they are in gear all of the time. To move your boat backwards, simply rotate the engine 180 degrees.

hi i was wondering if you had any luck on dating the outboard.

i have the same model no 49b37d serial no b021930 bought in ireland (used),

so my outboard would be same year but cannot find listed details anywhere, engine is still workin just needs new impellor trying to find outboard repair manual also,

49B37 is a 1979 4 hp

I notice you say "bought in Ireland" so I guess the "B" in the number indicates that it was made in Belgium.

49B37D = 1979 EVINRUDE 4 hp

4BR79D = 1979 JOHNSON 4 hp

you're right it says made in belgium by evinrude on the outboard, guess i was looking up wrong sites cant rely on google!!
