Deal on a flood loss

I wonder if there will be many boat engines like outboards that sank during the terrible flooding and now can be bought REAL cheap. Or are they just going to be sold without any discount and disclosure.....I will pay several crisp 100 dollar bills for the right almost new 45 HP Mercury....Its got to be nice and repairable for cheap..

not to sure i would buy one sunk in salt water. fresh is worth the risk

Those should start in a few weeks on crags list I can see the adds now , slight water damage needs tlc

Don't know how much of a deal that would really be, after sitting for several weeks you almost certainly would have to rebuild it and all the electronics would be shot so you would have to replace all the components and connectors.

And a problem with flood cars at least is you are always chasing gremlins.

I think I would have to pass.

Dunno if you've priced the newer OB motor parts lately, but you'd probably be better off paying more and buying a used one like you want locally that hasn't been flood damaged.

Be very cautious. Not only will you have the obvious problems from salt water immersion, but also the effects of an inability to properly salvage the motors once they came out of the water.

The marina and 'shop' infrastruture here is so badly damaged that I doubt those motors were flushed and 'pickled' as soon as they were raised. The goal has been to get everything out of the water and out of the way of the rebuilding efforts.

Keep in mind it is salt water, so anything that is sunk/flooded, may be a tough restore. but to your point, I'm sure that there will be lots of boats, because many of the marinas got trashed with the high storm surge.

We had our fair share of 'Hurricane Katrina Cars' make their way up to the northeast . . . sold in the used market . . . most of the floor panels rotten out within a couple of years.

So, yes there will be boats, motors, etc. to buy . . . problem would be finding a diamond in the rough.

Have you ever seen a "Swimmer?" Unless salvaged within a couple of days (at best) or a couple of hours there is nothing salvageable in the powerhead. Might as well buy a good used or new engine.

Cheap outboard, sure. Cheap to REPAIR? highly unlikely.

With an OLD outboard, you could salvage it if done correctly and even then, it wasn't cheap. With a modern outboard with fuel injection and lots of computers, the cost to replace those is going to more than eat up any savings you might ever find.

the deal will be to find an outboard on a boat that was damaged but not sunk. You can immerse an outboard up to its neck with no ill effects. The trick will be getting reliable information on the casualty; a completyely immersed adn drained OB might not show any effects inside the cowl.

Will make for good deals on lower units, and i suppose the used prop market will be flooded too
