You can swap the piston rods but you would need new cap bolts. The pistons will depend on condition. You would want to replace all of the piston rings. You still will need a complete gasket set and there is no way to tell about the block and crank until you open it up.

ezeke's got it nailed.

Unfortunately, there's no good short cuts here. You're just going to have to peel it all apart and see what's what. Once you do that, this forum can help you decide what the best course of action is.

Ok, I got a look at the piston and it doesn't look bad. I could only see a small portion of the piston though. Here are a couple of shots of different parts of the piston. What should I do next?

Hard to tell, but it looks like your top ring is gone.

The piston doesn't look awful from what I can see - couple of scratches. What does the cylinder look like? Big scores, or just a couple of small scratches?

Very minimum - you're looking at splitting the cases, honing a cylinder and replacing a set of rings. If it were mine, i'd be considering an oversize piston, new rings all around, bore one hole and hone the rest. I'd probably toss in a new set of lower end bearings too.

If you're willing and capable of doing all the assembly work, you're probably looking at under $500 parts and machining for addressing everything I mentioned. Perhaps substantially less depending on what you find.

Of course, that's all just fixing what broke. You need to address what caused it. I'm guessing you've got carbon build-up that caused the ring to stick and catch on the port.

The cylinder walls look great. No scratches at all. I do have another problem though. One of the head bolts broke off when unscrewing them, then the backout tool broke off when trying to remove the broke bolt. Anybody know a good way of getting this bolt out?

Was that "backout tool" otherwise known as an "EZ-out"???
Best bet---take it to a machine shop! If you try to drill it out, you'll just make it worse.
Good luck,

You're now at the mercy of a machine shop to remove the ez-out if they can. You've just discovered why I don't use them.
