I got a 1968 glass boat as a spring project with my kids. It wont be perfect, but il shooting for reliable and good looking. The hull is done, 50 screw holes filled and sanded and all painted... the deck has even MORE screws in it, that have been filled...ready to paint. Is it possible to put on GELCOAT with normal tools or is it a special process?1 boat size.jpg

Have you checked the innards of that thing to make sure she isn't rotten? She sounds like a prime candidate for exploratory surgery with all of those penetrations. You wouldn't want to spend the time and money to gel coat her only to find out she was rotten and unsafe and you had to tear her apart to fix her right.

Normally I would recommend Gelling the hull..and painting the deck.

It is A lot of messy work doing deck gel.

Yes you could do it with a 2 qt pressure pot spray setup from HF. ( NOT the HVLP one ).

Prep is 80-120 .. wipe..apply gel..sand/buff.

Of course there is more to it then that..but it kinda gives you an idea.

A good two part polyurethane auto paint or even a one part, is better than gel and easier to put on. No sanding and buffing if sprayed on well. Awlgrip and petit make brushable marine paints that are pretty good at hiding the brush strokes. Some of the premier large yacht builders paint them instead of leaving the gel coat as the exterior finish. Paint doesn't fade as fast as gel coat and is harder.

yes, the transom is solid, the floor...a bit spongy in spots. This season a quick lap over with 1/2" ply, next season, a total replacement. Rome wasnt built in a day :)

Notwithstanding questions of whether it's safe to take yourself and kids on a boat with a known "spongy" deck...

If you're looking for a quick, durable, easy to apply deck covering that's non-slip and not too pricey, try Interdeck from Interlux. One-part poly with anti-slip already in it.

Then why would you ask anything about Gelcoat application ?

If your gonna do a quicky lapover with ply..then use whatever carp paint you can find on sale.

Good luck mate.

Agreed. Go for it cheap and tear it apart next season. Assuming everything else (transom) is safe.

That boat is more rotten than you think if the deck has started to get spongy... but hey, it's your boat and your kids and you can do whatever you please with it. Just tryin' to help in case you didn't know.
