I have a 77 Chrysler Sport Fury with a slight soft spot in the floor. What is the best way to repair it for a few years without spending a fortune? Help always appreciated. Someone told me to just put a piece of formica on it. I thought about plywood over it. Hate to tare into it and find rotten stringers etc. Please share your knowledge.

Re: deck soft spot

Boat beginner,

I had the same problem with the boat I bought a few months ago, it was my first boat too. There were a few soft spots, which I could let go, but one of the spots was under a pedastal seat, had to fix it. Once I got the carpet up, I realized that about 65% of the floor was rotting or completely rotted out. I deceided that since I was going to keep it for some time I would replace everything. So with a sawz-all and a pry-bar I began. The stringers or joist were some how OK. I would suggest being very carefull with the saws or you could make ALOT of extra work for your self. I bought two sheets of 3/4in. high grade exterior ply wood. I Painted it on both sides with exterior paint. I installed it in sections, attaching it to the stringers with liquid nails and some VERY short galvinized wood screws. I went back and sprayed expanding foam throughout the boat between the floor and hull. I additonally calked all joints with clear silicon. "Be carefull with the length of the screws or you'll make ALOT of extra work for your self." I not sure what the pros would say about my job, but I am expecting it to last for a long time. The entire job on my 14ft boat cost a little over a hundred bucks. Take all of this with a grain of salt, I'm merely a shade-tree mechanic. Good luck, RF

Hey Raleigh Wood,

Do you go to Kerr Lake very much. I was born and raised around there and Currently live down the road from you in Concord. I keep my boat at my folks place on the water there.

Deerdog

Deerdog,

I've only had my boat a few months, so I haven't got a chance to get up to Kerr yet, as close as I've come was a lake map I just bought. Mainly I've been going to Falls, Harris and Jordan lakes. When it warms up a little I'm sure I'll head up towards your stomping grounds, assuming I can keep this old piece running. Take it Easy, Ross
