Re: DEER HUNTERS !!! Got buck fever yet? Maybe we should post pics ?

My son and I have our deer cams out and have been getting ready for the big hunt. We have several deer coming into our stand. We put our last batch of corn out about a week ago and it is now gone so clean up for hunting will be easy. We have a day time scent dripper to condition them to day time visits. I didn't have a lot of faith in it at first but it is starting to work just fine. I'm adding some pics of some of the deer we have coming in to the stand. Along with these are about 10 other bucks from spike up to 8 pts. and about 15 to 20 does. Hope you enjoy. God Bless.

Heartbreaking day deer scouting... Went down to do our set up yesterday [sun] Come to find out the land owner has allowed a local ATV club to cut trails and run thier ATVs thru the woods once a week. Hes 80 sumtn and dont know any better or give a %@#$. I think he thought we would appreciate all the new trails. They have run a bulldozer right thru some of the best bedding areas that used to hold alot of deer. On top of that ,there was no crops planted and they let it all grow as hay fields and its allready been cut to the ground. We had about 450 acres 1/2 woods 1/2 crops roughly.
Now if that wasnt enough, The one cronic inconsiderate A hole we have in or 6 man hunting group has been down hunting turkeys for 5 days ending Sat and I saw his truck tracks and footprints by every single one of MY stands..He the kind that will spend all day stinkn up everybodys chunk of the woods but his, Most frusterating. Our standing rule was nobody in the woods for 2 wks prior to opener.
Its private land we lease for a thousand bucks for hunting season. Its gettn tougher by the year, so I have my work cut out for me.. Gonna really have to be on my game [pun] to shoot a nice buck...

My dad called me yesterday to let me know that his trail cam has seen several spike horn bucks, a 6pt, 8pt and a 10pt within the last 2 weeks.

I guess I'm hunting up north this year.

Good luck to everybody.:)

This is the first year in 40 years of hunting that I could not be with my hunting friends hunting the great north woods of Maine because of health issues. They hunt some harsh terrain to get their deer. You best make your shot count when hunting northern Maine, you may not get another chance.

Bob Willson, 80 years old who still hunts about 4 miles a day brought down a nice 10 point buck. Do not under estimate Bob, he can keep up with most young men.

Ahhh, the chicken coop! Time for more memories.... Sorry to hear your hunting grounds got messed up. Hopefully, the deer will still come your way. Will be looking for those pics!

Heading up north tomorrow around noon. Stopping at Gander in Duluth to pick up that cheap nonresident license. I guess a few days ago there were 16 deer in dads field. Would like to see one with a decent rack.

Good luck, Paul!

That's not a hunter, that's a poacher. And just like any criminal, they deserve to be punished. Hopefully the game warden will track him down and bring him to justice.

Well Bubba most poachers are locals, they live in the general area. Most hunters want to see a poacher brought to justice. You have that one percent that want to ruin it for the honest ligitiment hunters. There are thousands of acres closed to hunting because of the few jerks.

Hunters have to communicate with land owners, know the restrictions and safety zones if any. One 100 acre farm across the street from us that we had permission to hunt on for many years, had been sold a few years back and sure enougth up go No Hunting signs and this guy was a partridge hunter. I had the opprotunity to see him working in the yard, went over, introduced myself and mentioned we had the camp across the street, explained how we always hunted that property. Well, he gave us permission to hunt his property with one stipulation, if the wives car is in the driveway stay away, she hates hunting. That farm is still open for us to hunt.

Most states allow deer hunting a half hour before sun up. :)

I spoke with my cottage neighbor yesterday. He spent a week in the bush last week plus a couple of trips to get the camp set up. All week he didn't see a deer. When he got back home his wife showed him a photo of the nice 8 point she saw on the front lawn a few days before.:)

Bubba we're all sorry about your issues with hunters but let's allow this hunting thread to continue for the enjoyment of our hunting enthusiast members. Feel free to continue the discussion in another thread.

I got my tree stand assembled and set up in my back yard this evening. Way cool! My neighbor buddy came over and helped. Good people.

I'm gonna let the stand air out for a few days (it's new), then take it over to the WMA on Friday. I'll be scouting a couple times this week to find a likely spot. We finally got a little rain last week, so hopefully my favorite place will work.

I'm gettin' fired up about opening day this coming Saturday!

Re: DEER HUNTERS !!! Got buck fever yet? Maybe we should post pics ?

No updates yet? Hmmmm, that doesn't sound good.

Sat. afternoon after sitting only 15 minutes in the stand I shot a 5pt that walked behind me only 20yds away. No pics. I forgot to take some b/4 I brought it to the processor. I normally cut them up myself, but since it was so warm I decided to let them do it. That way it was put in a cooler right away.

The big story was Sat. morning after only an hour on the stand. Had a trophy 8pt(wide heavy rack with tall tines) walk across the field and stopped broadside to me only 75yds away. Was in a portable ground blind under a large jackpine in the shade. Laid the gun on the window of the blind and pulled the trigger. Missed. The deer didn't even move. Shot again. Missed. The deer still had no idea it was being shot at. Still broadside, shot again. Missed. I knew my gun was off by then and figured I was just wasting rounds. The gun jammed between a couple of shots so I had to eject shells. Shots 3 and 4, I was picking up individual shells off the ground and reloading. After shot 3, it finally knew something was up and was trotting around. After I picked up the last round off the ground, reloaded, it was coming straight at me(my favorite shot) only 50yds away. Still with the gun rested, I shot. Missed and it took off. I had 4, took my time for each, shots. I almost wrapped the gun around a tree.:mad::mad:

Went to the gun range, put it in a rest, took a shot and never touched the target. I had just sighted it in a few days prior. The nite b/4 opener I noticed the forestock was a little loose. Tightened the bolt and it changed everything. If I wouldn't have touched it, the head would be going to the taxidermy.

I've been having gun issues for a few years. I finally have it figured out. The forestock bolt was tweaking the barrel when it was tightened, even if you applied only a little pressure. Went to the gunshop yesterday and they set up the bolt to bottom out b/4 any pressure is appled to the forestock by the head of the bolt. Going to resight it this am...

The only update I have is a pic of my tree stand in my back yard. The season opens for me this coming Saturday.

I'm actually on my way out the door in a couple minutes to go scouting again.

Got a couple packages this morning from Bass Pro with stuff I ordered for the season. Almost ready...

Congrats on the 5 pointer.:)

We always go to camp on a Sunday, I always bring two targets, one for me and one for my friend that rides to camp with me, I bring all the tools needed to tighten scopes etc: He never sights his riffle and misses a lot of deer.
