I've seen several threads reference small-block chevy marine performace written by Dennis Moore. I've attempted to locate a copy (to be in the know) but am not having any luck. Barnes and Nobles and everybody else I've checked online doesn't have this book. Isn't it in print any more?

Adam B<br /><br /> I spoke to Dennis about the smallblock performance book yesterday..I wanted one too.. He said the publisher has stopped publishing them and he doesn't think there will be any more. There we're about 15,000 published ...he said occasionally one will hit E-bay.<br /><br />Just in case anyone has a couple extra copies I know where you could probably sell them, ha.<br /><br />In fact..I'd give $50 for one right now...no kidding..<br /><br />Stan

hello<br /> while the performance books are nice I still would recommend the "motor auto engine and electrical" as a must read. if you dont understand the basics, and most techs dont, you cannot get the rest right.

Re: Dennis Moore performace Books

I'm not a tech, I am just a back yard mechanic that knows how and likes to bolt on horsepower on street engines and how to make them rev higher and hook harder etc., can even tweak the program then flash and reflash the computers in my cars with GM programs I obtained. However, gear sets and long tube headders and computer programs won't help with my boat LOL. I've never built a high torque truck engine either (although I got the itch to work my truck), just built up LT1's and now my LS1. Anyhow, can anybody recommend any other decent tech books for building torque and horsepower from marine engines?

Re: Dennis Moore performace Books

Oh, and another reason I found I don't know squat about marine engines is the boat I bought has a rebuilt 50 hours or so chevy 350. The guy I bought it off of said I should re-adjust the valve train, as he set it loose. Okay, standard Chevy 350 right, set to 0 lash, 1/4 turn tighter and all is good. Found out that marine engines need 3/4 turns...thank God I had a manual. Now I'm smart enough to know I don't know about marine engines... Although the above may have something to do with roller and non roller cams...

Dennis is the GOD of HP marine engines and a great guy...it's a shame those books went out of print. Dennis has forgotten more about marine engines than anyone else will ever know. <br />If anyone needs any specs out of Dennis's SBC book, let me know and I'll send what ya need.

Re: Dennis Moore performace Books

adam<br /> thank god for the boltem on and runems.paid my mortgage many a month with what I took off them with a kinda mostly stock w-30 olds.<br /> if you dont understand the basics you wont ever make power but you will spend a bunch of cash.<br /> even with reading the books it wont help until you understand what each system does and how it works with the others.<br /> I used to love kids and the stangs and camero's. <br /> 100 bucks and heads up, sometimes I would offer to take off in 2nd gear even :) .<br /> most them poor kids bought the bolt on stuff cause it was a hotrod mag feature then wondered why I smoked them. usually I would make sure to not beat them by more than a car length so I could do it again after the next toy they bought :) <br /> and a more precise way to set the lash is with a dial indicator. most stock chebbys actually set a 1 turn past zero lash. someplace I have the actual lifter plunger preload spec.

Re: Dennis Moore performace Books

Well, I'm not a kid, and I run Corvettes, not stangs. Do all my own work and am proud of my accomplishments since I have never taken an engine course. I can tweak my AFR every 400 rpms, attempting to keep it near stoich 14.7:1 etc. (of course that's using the oxygen sensors on board as I don't have a wide band) Love the 4.10 gears Chevy has also and love the feeing of a lopey cam, but like I said, won't help me with a carbed boat (although I did buy a torque shift prop recommend by Bondo. Hopefully that'll help in the torque dept. Oh, and sometimes to help hooking up, I would start in 2nd. My Chevy 350 marine says to turn 3/4 in 1/4 turn increments waiting 30 seconds per 1/4 turn. My L98 Chevy says 1/4 period. Rodbolt, not to flame, but without bolt on intake systems, exhaust, gears etc., do you run standard manifolds etc? Would be a waste to have an engine try and breath through them...would be a shame to couple good ported heads, cams, high ratio roller rockers etc. with no bolt ons...I think I have the gist of normally aspirated engines that turn 4 wheels. But back to my boat...

You have to build an engine to make the best of a restrictive exhaust. Even through hulls with high performance manifolds are restricted compared to a set of headers.<br /><br />Many of the underpowered boats people want to build up also suffer from Alpha Drive-itis. Fire breathers need not apply.

Re: Dennis Moore performace Books

hello<br /> as far as my motor yep I had the torker intake and a set of C castings that I extensivly modified. ports welded and reshaped and the cross over welded shut but most importantly the runners were port matched and enlarged. in some classes aftermarket intakes are not allowed. there is much that can be done to help stock intakes and heads where nessasary.<br /> the object is to make as much air as possible flow in and out in the shortest amount of time possible. at 7200 rpm there is not a lot of time to suck squeeze bang and blow. mind you this was long before injection and computer controls. but all the same principles still apply. the first order is to figgue out what RPM band your going to make power in.<br /> I saw to many kids go to the 2.02 angle plug heads and open phlenum intakes only to find they actually went slower at 5000 rpm than before.but they had read it in the magazine and it looked good there. they forgot about all the research that went behind the article and the long hours of trial and error.<br /> most could not actually check valve train timing <br /> its amazing the amoumt of cams and timing gears that I have rejected over the years due to incorrect manufacture. not only did we set it up on #1 we then checked the other profiles as well.<br />assembly of some engines was done 10-15 times while checking various parts.<br /> but if all ya want is 5500 its mostly unnessasary.

Re: Dennis Moore performace Books

Thanks all for posting... if you saw in another of my posts that i was thinking of converting my 4 barrel carb (on my boat) for a TPI unit off of C4 Corvettes. The runners are long and should be good for low end torque...Unlike my old LT1 runners which were approx. 3 inches long and made good horsepower at high revs but suffered on low end hence I installed 4.10 gears myself) But haven't decided if it would be approved by USCG. Will ask before attempting to do anything that drastic. I know there are differences between auto carbs, but don't know why auto TPI wouldn't be approved. Would be computer controlled and be more like something I am used to playing with. Anyhow, was curious if Dennis Moore set anything like that up... BTW, you can change the ECM from chip to EEPROM flashable

Adam,<br />would like to hear more about your carb to TPI conversion. Maybe a new thread would be in order.<br /><br />I don't know much about the Corvette EFI systems, but I do know marine systems well. Assuming that the Corvette system in speed/density system and not mass air flow. How will you address the missing input from the O2 sensor?<br />Dave

Really leave them scratching there heads, heh?<br />And as to the original question, I have just set up a "Dennis Moore Exhaust Manifold" fund. Seems stupid to buy any other when running salt...buy the best and get the max life.
