Excessive carbon build-up can also cause detonation. Are you sure it is detonaton or a lean mixture situation?

c/6

Hooty

Re: denotation evinrude 235

You have a '79 235 that only just now fried the pistons??????? Seriously, detonation is caused by timing too far advanced, "lean" fuel burn, "lugging" the engine, poor quality fuel, overheating, poor quality oil,and on a 235, starting it up. Sorry, couldn't help myself.
If the timing is too far advanced, if a blocked fuel passage or partially blocked passage in the carb, running an incorrect size prop so the engine doesn't turn the upper limits of the rpm range, fuel that doesn't have proper octane, marginal water cooling, oil with poor lubricating properties. All of these individually or in combination with each other may cause detonation, pre-ignition and eventually severe internal damage. 235's were very prone as most have been installed on fairly heavy hulls. Often, the dealer would put the incorrect prop and contribute greatly to the problem. Ever wonder why the engine builders don't provide props with the engines anymore???
