Depth Finder Not Working?

It seems that my depth finder has quit working. It seemed like it started to displaying things intermittently. Then it started to display depths that were impossible for the lake every so often, but now it shows only "--". This is the OEM depth finder that came in my 2000 Maxum 1900 SC. Any suggestions on where to start?

Transducer has come loose from its mounting (shoot through hull) or the face has become fouled with algae, or it has just simply died.
