Re: Depth Finder Question

Wow, the one question I didn't think anyone would ask. I had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn't April 1st.

Hmmm, let's say that you had your boat on a boat lift so that it was out of the water. If you lowered the transducer so that it was in the water then you could get some readings, at least on certain models that can read in shallow water. Otherwise, a fish finder on land is like a duck out of the water...not very adept. That's what it seems like to me anyway.

Even if you used a water barrel on land and put the transducer in, it seems that it just wouldn't be deep enough to get good readings.

That's my take on it anyway.

Re: Depth Finder Question

I would also say no. Most fish finder will still ping out of the water but sound travels about 4 times as fast in water as in air. So any reading you get will be 4 times as deep. Transducer 2 feet above the ground and it will read 8 feet. Some say can harm your transducer. I have seen a Lowrance Rep demostrate with a transducer he was holding durning a little class.

It would be much better to do it in the water. Calibrate it for actual water depth or depth below your lower unit.
