I have two Hummingbirds. They work just fine as long as you keep the transducer free from algae and barnacles. Each cost under $100.
I have never tried the gauge types though. I prefer to see the bottom.

Al B I installed that very same model in my Glastron GT185 last year and it has worked flawlessly ever since. The best part was the hull mounted transducer puck... no drilling required. If you go with this one, follow the epoxy directions to the letter and you'll be fine. On my boat I had to fish the cable along the gunnels using a wire fish tape.

If you don't have access to a fish tape these make a great cheep alternative: http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=24641-319-LX-90220&detail=&lpage=none
These sink drain cleaners work great as a fish tape and you get 20 feet of reach. Also being only 1/4 inch wide, you can get thru some really tight spaces.

Thanks for the info everyone. Cribber thanks for the report, I think the one with the puck is where I'm headed, kinda all in one for the same price, and it comes in white! lol

I've used mine twice so far, once in a cool whip tub for testing, and yesterday after permanent mounting. Worked flawlessly in my opinion, comparing to depth numbers on the charts. We went out at low tide and it seemed more accurate than I had hoped.
