Please pics and it is easier to give advice. I think from your question that your engine is a model with a dynastart. It is mounted on the top of the flywheel. This dynastart is a starter and alternator in same package.

If it is the 20 with the starter/generator on top, then use a 5/16 X 18 bolt. It has been a while since I did one so if 5/16 doesn't fit, then use 3/8 X 16. You will know as soon as you try and there is no danger of damaging the threads unless you try forcing it when it is supposed to be free running.

Understand that removing this starter is not a simple job. wiring must be disconnected, the outer casing must be removed and the armature must be pulled. It is press fit on the crankshaft nut/shaft ( That is where the bolt is used) There is a bearing and carrier at the bottom of the armature and the mounting frame must be removed--all before you can pull the flywheel.

Superb thanks for your help though I had been back out at it today , top cover removed bolt removed and a real good helping of WD40 left for a half hour after a few gentle taps with a hammer and I do mean gentle and hey presto movement and off it came ,flywheel well a large screwdriver between it and power head at spark plug end (so as not to damage anything) a couple of sharp gentle taps with the ammer again and bingo off it came ,
Points removed and cleaned up they were dirty very dirty and replaced , set to approx0.020 ,
There was evidence of rubbing of the flywheel on the ht lead serving the top plug , reseated it and luckily it wasn't worn through both cores , repaired with silicone sealant over worn part, all electrical faces on both coils and flywheel cleaned ,
Wood rift key re inserted and flywheel back on ,
Top end starter and alternator
Stripped out and cleaned all faces spacer back in bottom washer back on armature back through brushes and top cover replaced ,
Wires reconnected and battery pulled from my shed
Cranked her over and hey presto both plugs firing
Added some fuel at 50/1 mix pumped the lemon and manually chocked carberator turned her over by using jump leads one to earth and touched the other onto the positive in at the top casing ,and hey we fired up
Only run for a few seconds and killed it as the silicone would not have been properly cured on ht lead ,
So far I have stripped carb aswell prior to flywheel as float was sticking
Next job I think is to start her up tomorrow and get her up to running temp ,
Plenty water being pumped
Though I don't think I am getting a forward gear as of yet that may be my next job
Then if that' works I will need to work out which wires to use for charging etc
Any ideas on gears pleas let me know
Kind regards derek
