Re: destroking engines?

Well, I think the headline of this thread should read: destroying engines, rather than destroking engines:D

If you want to go fast, why not just get you a nice MasterCraft I/O? These were made for speed and are often used for skiers. There are plenty of other high performance inboards available that will give you plenty of speed. Myself, I think getting an outboard set up, for that kind of speed is just plain crazy, because they are quite costly to run.

Truthfully, I wouldn't want to go that fast on water. Just too dangerous :O

Here is ya a recipe for a go-fast V-4 looper:
1985-87 small bore 140 looper block
Bore to big bore spec(3.685) and have cylinders finger ported
Raise exhaust ports.030 and intake ports .050
Replace "teacup" intakes with late model "angled" intakes
Replace steel reeds with a solid fiber reeds
Replace carb manifold with manifold and carbs from a 1998 225 V-6
Shorten the exhaust tuner 7/8 inch
Update water system like the 1987 70hp
Dump the OMC ignition and run the yamaha or custom MSD box ignition
With some knowledge,$$$ and time you can get this motor to about 165hp+!!!
Over on the Scream & fly site there was a article by al stoker on building a V-6 looper that put out 325hp!!!!

Faztbullet, I got a buddy who has built this very engine, he was hitting 7000rpm and the fiber reeds seem to flutter...he then decided it was ignition problem and he needed the yamy ignition, he now has all his pieces and machine work done and were waiting for summer...but whats so special about the yamaha ignition? I can't get a straight answer from my home boy.

Yea, I like outboards in the smaller variety, but if I'm gonna get something big and fast, I'll get an inboard V-8 A 300hp inboard V-8 may actually be easier on gas than a 200hp outboard.

This young man has a crossflow motor ..... not a looper so, that negates your recipe. He might as well start with an Allison surplus turbine for real power!

Lighter flywheel, machined upper cap, higher & equal voltage to coils, hotter spark intensity(bigger jets and more compression) higher or no rev limiter(depends on CDI box), parts used are the yammy flywheel, stator, trigger and cdi box and lastly Yamaha ignition parts rarely fail.

Bob-VT, I agree with you on this whole situation.'Taint worth the time, trouble or money. And geeze I never knew all those Yammie parts would fit on older OMC products.

Re: destroking engines?

Just about any of the racers that runs OBDA and has a Johnrude has either the MSD or Yammy ignition. Tony Wilson that helps puts on the "Thunder on the Ohio" runs the V-8 Omc's that put out about 450hp @ 10,000 rpm !! He custom builds the MSD ignition systems for Johnrudes and does engine mod's on the pre 2000 loopers. If you need his number pm me...
It only worth it if money or pride is involved:D
