I heard there was a company that sold "detune" kits that allow you to turn down your hp to allow use in horsepower restricted waters. Does anyone have any information?

seriously, all you need is a 9.9 hood or get some 9.9 stickers.

Agreed.... just get new stickers. There's no way in hell any "inspector" can disprove the stickers within the confines of the term "feasable".

The big 99ci inlines ranged from 90-150 hp. And there isn't a marine-hallmonitor on the planet that can tell the difference without complete dissasembly of the motor and an archaic knowledge of the little parts.

-W

game wardens around here work off serial numbers, not decals. Are new decals my only options?

Check the master serial number list - some Mercs use the same number range for the same displacement, regardless of rated HP.

If serial numbers are the only test of HP, then claiming you de-tuned it might not work. You could still de-tune it and have to argue serail number issues. All you have to do to cut the Max-hp is cut back the max spark-advance, but it's the stickers that will get them looking for trouble in the 1st place.

-W

So if you de-tune it and change the rest of the stickers you are still fighting that sticker if push comes to shove. No workaround I know except using the mid-section off another motor, or removing that sticker entirely (risky).

You need to know how they work (and what the fine is) to accurately assess "risk vs reward" of "gaming the games" as it were.

-W

The serial number tag on my 2001 model 25 hp states the horsepower as well as the model and serial number. If the wardens are in the habit of looking at the serial number tag and this is a late model engine swapping the decals aint gonna do ya much other than garner you a ticket.

Make yourself an invoice from xyz marine that states:
Qty 1 off - Detuning Mercury serial number: Your serial - Detuned from Xhp to Yhp - Cost 100USD

Buy the decals and add them to "your" invoice aswell...
Maybe add some miscellannious parts like jets or "exhaust restrictors"

Keep the invoice in your boat.
