I have a very general question and I'm expecting people to reply and say "it all depends what's wrong with it" but that's not what I'm looking for. I have a 86 Johnson 65 HP motor. Let's say that the person who owned it before me never kept up maintenance on it. and he maybe had it for 5 years. Right now it doesn't run. Not to sure what's wrong with it. I do know it's nothing major. The compression is good in all 3 cylinders. SO my question is about how much would it cost if I sent it in to get almost like a complete overhaul or tune up. I don't know what to call it. I guess I need a worse case and a best case scenario of a price. I know no one could get it down to the actual dollar but I need a basic idea. Like are we talkin in the thousands and if so is it under 5 grand or what. I hope I've explained myself clearly. I know I can take the motor in to have it looked at and then obviously they'll give me a price but most places you have to pay a truckload just for them to look at it.

If the compression is good, that's a good start.<br /><br />If you do the work yourself, figure this.<br /><br />1. Manual $30.00<br /><br />2. Rebuild carbs $75.00 parts<br /><br />3. Water pump kit $75.00 parts<br /><br />4. Service lower unit $25.00 parts.<br /><br />All that with about 10 hours at $75.00/hour.<br /><br />That's just the maintenance items that need to be addressed. Any other parts/diagnosis is going to be extra.

complete overhaul = big $$$$<br /> <br />tune up = smaller $$$$<br /> <br />Labor is what will eat the cash and as DJ said sometimes there can be the unknown.It is very hard to say what price you are looking at without knowing the machine itself. There are hundreds of different factors to take into play.

And you CAN and SHOULD do these things with the help of a Manual and this forum.. Sounds like it's worth a shot for $200.00 to give it a try.. These are just maintenence jobs...

make sure you mix the gas 50/1 untill you are sure the vro is good ( personally I would remove it from the system at that age) It will help to lube the rusty bits.

I'd throw another $50 in for plugs, fuel pump, fuel hose and bulb, an maybe plug wires.

Here is the funny thing,the $200-$250. worth of service parts these Gentlemen are telling you about will fit in a dime store candy bag, all except the manual. It's sort of like buying diamonds. Here is a question for you. Why would someone that doesn't know outboards want this motor? Even if a person is in the know it can be real tough to make out on these kind of deals. deals

best case senario already stated, worst case?more than it would cost to buy a new motor with more horsepower.best bet buy a manuel and do those things you feel comfortable doing and then send it to a mechanic for the rest. alot of good help here on the forum but this is really alot like a trick question.
