Hey folks. I'm facing more and more 10hp restricted lakes around my area, and I've decided to move into a small rig for these purposes. I've got a 14ft. Sea Nymph "Super Cartopper" with a 15'' transom. Rated for 15hp. Came with a 5.5hp Evinrude on the back. It gets us around the lake but certainly not quickly. It also leaves a HUGE wake behind the boat. I've experimented with different weight distribution, trim, etc. Still plows water and it certainly feels like the motor isn't reaching full RPM.

SO, i picked up a 68' Johnson 9.5 . It runs but needs a water pump so I haven't put tested it on the boat yet. Think i have enough power to plane this 130lb boat, with 300 lbs of people and 100 lbs of gear, gas, etc?

The 9.5 hp should do fine. I plane a heavy 14' utility with the same load using 1950's 10 hp motors. Not a speed demon, but it moves well. You'd be lucky to get on plane with the 5.5 hp even by yourself. With that being said, someone here planes a 14' boat with a 4 hp (I believe).

Yeah, it actually does better with two people in the boat than just with me. I just can't shift enough of my weight forward to get it out of the hole.

I can not get my 9ft. Glass on plane with a 6hp no matter what I do. Leaves a wake like a WakeBoard boat.

The lil? 6 will get my 13+ft inflatable up with one person, or barely with two of us doing all kinds of death defying contortionist maneuvers in the boat and the water is flat as glass.

I tried it with a 10 & a 20, the 10 was good, but the 20 was real fun!

You might also want to try a tiller extension to move more of your weight forward when your are alone.
