Re: Did I get the wrong part for fill, vent, and drain plug on 85hp Force?

Well at least it is good to know I already have the right tools. I know that I will not be able to lift by myself so when I do it, I am going to have to get somebody to help lift. I do not have a vise to put the lower unit on once I dismount it. Any creative suggestions on what to do if do not have a vise. The weather is so hot right now I may have to wait unil it cools down, even in the 90's at night. I will defineltly start another thread when I start on the project. In the meantime I need to order impeller and I guess a seal kit in the event that I find some leaking seals. Since the oil is coming from the weep holes, what seal do you think would most likely be the culprit?

I made this in about an hour.
Works great!!!
Don't buy anything other than the impeller.
The new drain plug gaskets might fix the leak.
Weep holes? Could it be unburned gas/oil?
Any leaks from the top of the drive could be the seal under the pump(MAYBE????)
Gotta test it first.

Hey can I borrow that!LOL Okay now I am trying to visualize how the motor goes on this stand, how do you keep it from tipping over. I promise I am not a blonde!!

Well I put oil in yesterday. Wiped all of the oil off. Went to look at today and there was oil coming from the area where weep holes are, to me it looks more like it is coming from around the screws on the bottom of the cavitation plate but I have been told that cannot happen. I wiped the oil with white napkin and it showed the blue/green gear oil. I contemplated that maybe I did not get all of the oil off after filling so I wiped clean and will recheck tomorrow.

I would also like to ask about another thing. When I I first went to take plugs off of the lower unit I opened the fill hole first, when I did alot of oil was coming out this and this is where one of the leaks was. Now since I replace the seal I do not see anymore leaking. My question is should there be alot of oil coming out of the fill hole, does it mean that it was overfilled?

Picture 001.jpgThe stand is for the lower unit while it's off.
The extra oil was probably from the extra water it took in.
They heat up and cool down.
Heating up expands the oil/metal and it pushes oil out through seals.
Cool down the metal/oil cools and it creates a vacum, sucking water past the seals.
If it holds pressure then it cann't get water in or out.

Well cleaned case again last night and took a look this afternoon and definetly gear oil coming from both weep holes on one side, the ohter side is okay although when I first noticed the oil last week both sides were doing same thing. Well I quess I do not need to do a pressure test anymore, looks like a seal gone bad. It would not be suprising, boat sat for 5 years before I got it. I am pretty sure that maybe all the seals and o-rings need to be changed out. Next step, Jerry's soap water test. thanks for all of your help!!!!
