Did the shop install the wrong part??

I have a mid-90's (96-ish) Merc 90hp with the nice flip up "hatch" on the engine cover where you add the oil.

The sensor in the oil tank went bad, and I just got it back from the shop. The new tank doesn't line up with the existing "hatch" on the cover. Totally different filling opening. I have to completely remove the cover in order to add oil.

Has this part been redesigned, or did the shop just order/install the wrong part for my engine.

Thanks!

Go to dougrussell.com or mercuryexpress.com and look up the part number. See if it matches the part number on your invoice. You will need to know your serial number or exact model.

I would also call the shop and ask them why it is changed.

Sometimes companies will make one universal style part to fit many different older models, instead of making several different exact fit parts.

Hope this helps

I have the same problem , the tank top sits too far to the left so i have to remove the cowl to fill with oil. What I do is just make sure I add oil before I leave my driveway. This way I'm not doing it on the water.

Re: Did the shop install the wrong part??

It would be most helpful if a serial number for this engine is available as I do believe this is one of the earlier oil tanks with the flip open lid on the tank itself and the replacements are a cap style opening. I've never seen the alignment issue being referred to, but I've got a 115 HP with the old style flip open tank in my shop right now and the replacement is a kit to install the newer style. I'll make a point of checking to see if there's an alignment issue with the tank and the opening in the cowl. It's interesting about these newer engines with onboard oil tanks and the float problem. Actually it's not a float problem at all. It's a magnet problem..........it comes loose from the float and then just lies on the bottom and trips the magnetic switch which turns on the alarm. I always replace all of the oil lines on the engine when I do one of these as they're probably on the verge of cracking anyway.

Thanks twocycle. I'd be interested in knowing if you see the alignment problem as lisfisher and I have.

Serial Number on my 90 is OG062820

I checked a few other shops in town and on the net and confirmed that this is the new kit.

If that's the case , I'm wondering if I can safely assume my oil sensor has been replaced as well { bought it used}
