Hello all: I am working on a 1986 Johnson 90 HP outboard for a friend and it has an issue of running strong for 5 minutes and then dying. It will still idle and putz along though. (This is what I am told and have not been in the boat while on the water)

It is hard to check out in my driveway with no load on the engine but I have did the basics including first checking plugs / gap and changing bad plug wires. I know this is not the issue but basics must be performed first.

Pulled the fuel pump filter and inspected and cleaned. Has a new fuel filter / water separater. Removed cracked fuel line.

Added some methyl hydrate to the gas tank incase water intrussion as this is a classic symptom of an inboard engine with water in tank. I told him to pull the fuel line and pop it in a fresh gan can and take it for a kick so we can pip the blame on contaminated gas or eliminate the issue.

I am not familiar at all with these 2 stroke Johnsons and thought maybe someone may have an experienced thought they could pass along.

I really do not want to spend a couple hours out on the lake in this cold October weather trouble shooting if I can come up with a possible fix with help from a member.

DAMMNN I just thought of something, plugged fuel tank vent. Will check this out but please post any other suggestions...

Stay tuned

Bill

Have yo checked out the carbs yet? A good rebuild and cleaning very well may end the problem.
If you do water test it and it starts dying, try pumping the fuel bulb while it does this and see if it helps. May help diagnose a faulty fuel pump.

Does that motor have an overheat sensor? If so, it could run for about five minutes until it overheats. The overheat system then cuts the power back to an idle to minimize damage to the engine. Some newer engines have that system, but not sure about that older model.

That was certainly my first thought. Classic symptoms of it anyway....

Squeeze ball just before the 5 mins are up? If it fills the carbs back up and keeps running your fuel pump has a problem.

Check Top Secret Files.

Compression
Spark
Fuel delivery
Plug condition

Many reasons for the symptoms. Start with the above and go from there.

Yes but the hang over is a threat. Full blown shoot out last night....

Done, this is basic first steps in diagnosis. Only problem is fuel delivery is hard to diagnose with no load on the engine while in driveway and also spark in regards to the multiple coils after running at full load as it also cannot be simulated in the driveway.

Nice to see someone close to home onboard.
