Re: Diesel oil vs gasoline engine oil

Oils have changed- the zinc for flat tappet engines is a lot less... musclecar/jeep guys still use Rotella, thinking it's still good for that.

Gasoline oil first lost zinc, making guys run diesel oil, then in 2007 with the new emissions laws, the diesel oils lost the zinc also.

For a musclecar, I'd run brad penn oil (available online I think, probably some mom n pop speed shops). For my 200k mile Jeep I just use a blue bottle of STP oil additive with napa/whats on sale oil. SHAKE WELL BEFORE POURING to get the stuff suspended in the carrier oil!!! as it contains the zinc stuff.

DITTO .....the shell rotella is great stuff... i used it in my dodge/cummins when i had it.run it in motorcycles, suzuki v-strom, kawasaki klr 650, husqvarna te 510 ... and some other 4 strokers ... excellent oil. no oil issues with any engine and the stuff stays good and clean. works great in the bikes because it has no friction modifiers to slip the clutch. best part is ... its cheap ....:D

the only bad thing about it is that it smells a little funky after an oil change which is why it has the nickname .... rosmella

Sadly the Rotella's formulation also has changed.

Opps. I thought everyone could read my mine. It's a Kubota genset I rebuilt out of an 88 Sea Ray Sundancer. Don't have much experience with Diesel so this was an exciting moment for me!!!!!

Yes, that is true, that it is false! LOL Many new cars come from the factory brand new with synthetic oil. The old wives tales sure do take a long time to die, don't they?
